What's this attached

I found these attached to the bottom of my echinophyllia. They are on long-ish stalks attached to the underside. Does anyone know that they are? Also, should I move them to a better location if they're "nice?" Thanks for the help,

that would be a dreaded palythoa type zoanthid, aka green button polyp ;)

my guess is they wouldnt be too "sps/lps" friendly. i know zoa type species will sting, and kill most sps, some lps. notice how the edge of your echino is going up, and around the polyps in question. they dont appear to be hurting it badly, but my guess is it is obviously discomforting the edge of the echino since it is curled up and over the polyps.

best to remove them to be on the safe side. lps are too expensive to risk keeping regular ole button polyps hanging aorund it. keep your eye out for any kind of recession from the echino.

Thanks, will remove them. They're neurotoxic, according to Borneman's book, so I'll need to bo careful.

well, they are supposedly neurotoxic, like all zoanthids.

without getting into too much scientific stuff, basically, in order to make sure you arent poisoned by them, make sure you dont touch them with open wounds, do not eat them, and just make sure you wash your hands thorougly under hot water and soap after exposure.

i handle these all of the time and its not a big deal, as long as they do not touch any open orifice, in which toxins can get into your body. open orifices such as, mouth, nose, ears, eyes, any cuts/scrapes, and those 2 other places we need not discuss, b/c zoas have no business being down there.

another good way to do it, is to take some joes juice and syringe it into the polyps, just like eliminating aptasia.

most people's skin is pretty thick, and in good condition as they will not have to worry about any toxin being absorbed through their skin. you can wear some gloves if it makes you feel any better though. if you frag them and toss them away, just make sure to wrap it up in tp or something, and toss it in the trash where an animal/or pet cannot get to it accidently.

just keep it away from the LPS, do it very carefully, i'm not familiar with echino's....worst that could happen is that it thinks you are feeding it, and sucks up some of the joes juice when its not supposed to....that would ruin my day for sure if that happened
