we have this brownish mossy like stuff growing on the bottom of the tank. i'm not sure if we're just over feeding the fish and it's the food left over. but it's just all over the place. we also have some bubble algae, how do we keep that down?

Sounds like diatoms (just guessing from description). This means that your cycle is underway and you need to get the fish out. You need to fully cycle the tank before adding any fish, information about how/why cycle is in the stickies at the top of this forum.

Not necessarily true. Common to have diatom blooms off and on after a cycle. New rock, sand, new plastics can all cause some diatoms. If diatoms are the issue, use good water (0 TDS) for your water changes and keep up flow. They will go away once the initial silicates are gone. Definitely test you water though to be sure.

When I first started in the hobby I was using tap water and had the same problem. Like the post above said, use rodi water for the changes and make sure you have enough flow in your tank.

Yes you are right, I could be mistaken. Depends on if the OP cycled or not and how old the tank is. We'll just have to wait for him/her to respond :fish1:

my tank just did it because i changed my tubing to spa flex and new rubbermaid containers for sump. 2 days later diatoms.
