Whats under your rocks?

Im getting back into the hobby. What if anything o you put under your rocks to protect your glass? I am considering putting down a piece of lexan or plexiglass. Is this necessary?

I used egg crate as well. Many will say you don't need anything but I certainly feel better about using it.

nothing is needed.. but as stated use egg crate light diffusers if it helps you sleep at night..

When I had my 4' eel, I used eggcrate over the entire bottom of the tank, but he could easily move 15lb rocks at will.

Now that I have a SPS dominant reef, there is nothing under them but glass.

What I did was, To avoid any sharp or focused points of contact with the glass, I determined how the rock was to be oriented and ground the bottom flat by rubbing/grinding it around and around on some flat concrete then spread a thin layer of clear silicone on them. When it dried the rock set flat on the glass and didn't slide easily. Didn't want any rock settling or shifting burying tunneling or burrowing fishes. Worked very good.

I used plexiglass. I have a jawfish. Didnt want him scratching himself on eggcrate.

I use egg crate. I don't think there is any need to protect the glass but egg crate keeps the rocks from sliding around which can cause rock slides.

I use regular lighting grid eggcrate. I also set 5 taller bottom rocks as a 5-spot-die type pillar arrangement to support the rest of the rockwork with a lot of flow-through.

I should add the egg crate add traction for your rocks. Easier to stack.. more stable..

I have an acrylic tank so the bottom is acrylic. Under my rocks you will find 1 shrimp, my sand sifter and no sand.

You have received a lot of good suggestions, since you never stated, but you did say "I am considering putting down a piece of lexan or plexiglass." I took this as you were going bare bottom. Other responses were as if you were laying down sand.

im not going bare bottom... just curious about the weight of rocks on the glass bottom prior to adding sand. When I had larger tanks I stacked rocks on top of the sand bed. With the smaller tank I dont want rocks to move,

In that case any of the suggestions would be good. The egg crate would help the rocks from shifting, and hold the sand in place better I would think.
