Whats up with Geni. angels ?

Yes! It definitely seems to be geni season! Is it truly a seasonal genus or is there some other force at hand?

Jason- that first picture is gorgeous! I'm starting to become partial to the female over the male as she is beautiful. The male has been nothing but problems with flukes. I've read a bit about males often becoming overly aggressive and needing to be removed. I've seen that aggression already and was wondering if a trio would be better as the aggression would be slightly dispersed?

Heres a few really, really bad pics of the pair I picked up. They are about 5" in TL.

Right now, the male is in pretty rough shape. In the acclimation/observation tank, his eyes went cloudy, the female was shaking her head as was he, and other signs of flukes/anchor worms, helminthe like thingies... Now everybody from Acclimation, is in QT, the males left eye is about to shed, less head shaking, etc. But nothing I'd really like to show off... however i did have another thread from a week ago started with the progress from newly acquired, to looking terrible with symptoms. If youd care to take a look, I'm definitely not proud, but I'm happy to say that He is on the Rebound for sure ! (knock-on-wood)

Blue zoo has them available most always you just have to call and they will get whatever you need. They even got me 5 miltibarred pygmies... Which never come up for sale..

I live on NJ and I see them all of the time. Right now NY aquatic has female masked swallowtails. The Lfs near me has at least 3 of each species you listed above in stock right now. Not the rare ones of course.

Thats great!
And they are and have been, captive bred on a small scale. I havent checked any of the updated/recent Captive Bred Species Lists, but I think some focus should be geared towards this genus!

Im aware of Karen breeding G. personifer ! Quite a special Feat if you ask me, no matter what happened!!!

Has Rising Tide done any work with these fishes?

A LFS in Houston have a tank bred small bellus angel in stock at 100 dollars. I saw her there Saturday. The ownder said that he have had that Angle for about 6 weeks. I was going to buy her but she looks thin and not quite 100% healthy so I passed on it..

DD has had 2 Bellus harems in the past few weeks (one is on there now) and a bonded pair of Watanabei. In my experience, the bonded pairs are nice but always seem to be large in size. I'd rather start with them being smaller.

I purchased one of the Bellus harems (trio) 10 days ago and they were eating within an hour of showing up. All are small too. So far so good.

That's awesome!
I've been eyeing the bellus trios and some individual females they've had. What size were the three you ordered? Any sign of a male happening?

No signs of a male yet but one appears dominant. They are all around 2" and are doing great. 3 females of similar smaller size added at the same time was worth the extra money in my opinion.
They've now been in QT for 2 weeks, have gone through 2 doses of prazi and are eating well. I'm going to do tank transfer with them starting Saturday and then they're hopefully in the clear.

I recently added a small Lamarck's to my tank and after only two days he started nipping at the fins of my larger fairy wrasses. Not sure if i have to remove him or not yet. I didn't foresee this.

Their shapes are so different, I'd be surprised if it kept up.

Question for all btw: I have the Bellus harem but still like the Watanabeis. If they prove successful and I have plenty of room, I assume I can add Watanabeis later as well.

Thoughts?

178 gallon DIY.

I've only ever seen one Genicanthus angel for sale in any LFS I've been to around here in MN. IIRC, it was a tiny female bellus.

A friend of mine has a lamarck angel, but he got it through LA.

Don't forget about my female Lamarck that I snagged from PC-Minnetonka last year.
It seems that May/June are the months when many small angels make their way into the trade.

She is definitely the matriarch of the tank.
She didn't approve of me adding a pair of leopard wrasses which resulted in one of them perishing from starvation; as it hid most of the time from taunting.
But the angelfish has been a great addition to my reef tank as it never bothers the corals or other similarly sized fish.

Nice Fish!!

Yes, I also picked up a Male/Female pair of the Jap. masked swallowtail. I had never seen them available at an LFS before the two I purchased.
A very small Bellus was available too, wish i had picked her up too.

Tonymission- Which swallowtails? G. melanospilos, aka the males called 'Zebra' with full length bars, and the females without?

I would like to believe that the Trio on LADD was collected together and put through their Quarantine process? Hence the premium over buying 3 juveniles and putting them together. IMO just putting 3 small females together of any spp. within this genus could result in sex-based competition. Especially if two started turning male...

Great score on the JMS... hopefully they make it man!

I was having a hard time finding a male and just bought two females, one an inch bigger than the other figuring it would change. Been about 4-5 months and hasn't happened yet. It's definitely dominant but I'm not sure she's trying to "sexy up" for the smaller female yet.

I'm surprised you aren't seeing much. I'm on Long Island, and work at a pet store. I have Lamarck's and what I assume to be Melanospilos available to me almost constantly. In fact, I have a Lamarck's in my big tank at the moment, real sturdy fish. It came in looking like it was on death's door, and is now eating and healing up where it was bruised and beaten.

Now the rarer/expensive Genicanthus, I've never seen available to me.

Ive seen them before, I corrected myself as per what I said in my first post. I under exaggerated the number of times I've seen them. Its just these past two months that I've seen a shockingly enormous amount of the genus available. Like nothing in the past 6-7 years. This has been confirmed with a few LFS owners I know as well, on LI.

The melanospilus and lamarcks are definitely around more frequently. But the Bellus, Watanabei, Semifasciatus have not been, except for the odd specimen here and there. The semifasciatus, now they are reaching stores that have never even had them before!

I'll have to check my list again, I don't really pay attention to the expensive animals. I'll let you know what I see next week. I've also only been ordering fish for the past year, so I have no knowledge of what has been available longer than that.
