Whats up with mag drives?

I just got a mag 9.5 the other day and noticed something, so I thought I would do a little rant, as I'm sure most of you are well aware of the mag 9.5 has a 3/4 inch threaded connector for you to put on your barbs and other attachments, the sheet that comes witht he mag 9.5 box telling you about the flow and return if damage and maintaince and all that jazz says that the min. hose size for maximum flow is 1 1/2 inch inside diameter, now I ask you, how many adapters would it take to get from a 3/4 male thread to a 1 1/2 inch barb let alone finding a return pipe for a 1 1/2ID hose, not to mention that the 1 1/2 inch tubing is so thick that any turn you make on your way up to your tank would cinch the tube destroying the flow.

I don't really care mind you, just pointing out that the mag 9.5 being rated for its 900 gph is completely unrealistic *shrug*

How would it flow any more with a 1 1/2" hose? It still can only push what it can through the 3/4 outlet regarless of what it is pushing into.

Can't you use spa -flex?

i have ran mag drive for years through the fitting sizes that are on the pumps and have had no failures. the only thing is that they produce heat, produce salt creap over time and don't tighten female and male adapters too tight or you will crack the volute. let the teflon tape do the sealing. as for fitting sizes had heard people inducing pipe size but never heard of better performance or life with the pump.

It takes 1, 3/4" female thread/1 1/2" ID slip joint to go to 1 1/2"

This is how I did my Mag 18.

I then ran the 1 1/2" to the top of the tank and teed two 3/4" lines from there. That way my flow is constant. It works too good !!!

Exactly! A bigger pipe is not going to do anything b/c the inlet is still restricted to 3/4".

Just to be clear, as I've gotten some pms from ppl ****ed at me for "flaming mag drives" I use mag drive pumps on all 4 of my saltwater tanks, definately the best submersible pump out there. I'm just pointing out some flaws
