What's Wrong With My Leather Toadstool

I've had my neon leather toadstool in my rank for about 4 months. Lately I've noticed what looks almost like detritus build up at base. I tried to brush it but that didn't work. It's like its actually growing in the coral. It's gotten worse over the last week too. I don't know if it's some type of algae or what. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!

I'm not sure what that is exactly, but as long as the coral is still opening up on a regular basis I wouldn't worry too much about it. I've had all kinds of things grow on the stalk of my Toadstools before without any problems. (algae, sponges, corals etc) Just keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the reply! Ya, the coral still looks fine and isn't closed up. I'll just watch it for now.

Its a sign that there is not enough flow around the base of the coral - I get this on mine sometimes. I've always assumed the red algae is cyanobacteria and I am absolutely sure that the rest is unshed skin.

If moving the coral to higher flow is not an option you want to take, you can remove the unshed skin by blowing it with water out of a pipette and gently rubbing it away with your fingers. If its particularly stubborn use a soft toothbrush lightly. You may see a bit of white cloudy 'juice' from the use of the toothbrush - thats ok but go very gently!
