What's your favorite spirulina based food?

I also feed Spirulina 20. I like that the flakes are very large and don't become a bunch of small flakes over time. They can be easily broken to size when you feed. I think it's a great flake food.

I think I will add the super soft pellets mentioned above, but I will keep feeding Spirulina 20.

I used to feed a product called Aquatrol Spirulina 20 flakes for years in my old 180 gallon setup. I broke that tank down when I developed a nasty hair algae problem that I couldn't put a dent in. I wasn't sure at the time if flake food was a factor with my hair algae problems but there was a lot of anecdotal evidence to suggest that it might be. I haven't used the product since (zoo med sells it now) but the fish loved it and got it every day and were very fat and healthy. The flakes were indeed huge and all of my tangs, angels, and rabbits just tore it up. I currently feed formula 2 gel cubes and hikari spirulina brine frozen as my spirulina based foods.

I honestly dont know if Spirulina 20 flake food had anything to do with my HA problem or not. I do keep an even higher bioload now in the same tank but have a much better filtration system so I may try this again. Didn't know they sold a sinking stick version.

I too use this flake food. The fish are noticeably more attracted to it than regular flake, even if they haven't been fed flake food in a while. And yes, I found it to be thicker, and stay as large flakes in the container. BTW, NLS flakes are notably the worst in this regard. I basically have a can of NLS powder sitting in my kitchen cabinet

FWIW, I got this food in today and fed a bit. The black tang ate it, but it had to sit in the tank a bit before he was able to eat it.

For being "super soft" its pretty hard to crush with my fingers which I assume is the reason the tang isn't eating it immediately. The pellets are slightly bigger than the small/medium size NLS (which he can eat with no problem)

adding late, but I use the FM (faunamarin) Soft Spirulina food pellets which, IMHO are doing quite well. They are in my auto-feeder and I feed them manually as well.

I am a FM fan.. so take that for what its worth.. LOL

Hmmm, I'd still call them soft if you can crush them at all. Every other pellet brand I use feels like tiny rocks!

Have you tried presoaking them, especially in something like selcon or vitachem?

Well...I can't crush them with my fingers...guess I should have written that instead. haha. However, it seems the black tang is still eating it after it sits on the bottom of the tank, so I guess thats a plus.

I'll try to presoak them in Selcon or VitaChem first...good thinking. My black tang is easily my biggest tang, so I might try to crush them a bit as well, as most of my fish are smaller.

I ordered some HBH pellets today. I'm concerned, because my 5+ year ol tomini tang is starting to get a few pits of HLLE around the forehead. I hope these will help...

Good luck Peter. My 3 juvenile tangs (Orange Shoulder, Black/Scopas, Thompsons) have started to eat it a bit. They do sink kinda fast but I've seen them eat them all up off the sand.

I added these to my autofeeder, with one side being a mix of the smallest NLS and HBH pellets and the other side being the small/medium NLS pellets.

I have BB tanks, so the sinking part should not be a problem. I am seriously considering auto feeders on my tanks, if for no other reason than to not feel obligated to deal with feeding the fish when I get home, or worry about working late, which tends to happen more often than not.

I finally got the HBH pellets in. They are quite large. It's obvious the fish like them, and even the smaller ones try to swallow them, so I'm going to need to work on some ways of making them smaller, or softening them up by soaking them.

Mine love them. You could always crush a few for the smaller guys. My only complaint is my wife hates the smell so I keep them in sealed pouches. There may be a smaller variety available on that website as they have a huge variety of foods.

That's what I was talking about when I got them....they aren't soft enough for smaller guys to munch down on easy.

FWIW, I soaked mine in slecon and fed...however feed very slowly as the soaked ones sink very quickly, haha.

Wanted to update. Any of my fish that are even somewhat omnivorous go INSANE for these HBH spirulina pellets. I'm almost scared that some will choke on them trying to swallow such larger than they are used to pellets!!

I call it "Angel Crack" and as stated before all of my angels devour it. Hows the tomini liking them? Anytime I've a sign of HLLE I would soak pellets & frozen in Vita Chem. IME 100% recovery.

My tangs love it but I think its just too big for my wrasses to try out. My black tang makes sure to get every piece off the sand, haha

Agreed. Hoping the tomini gets better!
