What's your thoughts on carbon (media not dosing)?

So I stopped using GFO a couple months ago with really good results. Acros don't look as pale and are starting to color up and grow a low faster, zoas stay open and are multiplying now, and a brown mystery string algae has gone away. Now I'm thinking about stopping the use of carbon, should I do it? It sure would be nice to get rid of the reactor and clean up the sump area some.

I had the same problem with the gfo before. I was running too clean of a system and everything was pale and colorless. After removing the gfo and bringing up the phosphate levels my colors came back and my polyp extension was tremendously better. As far as carbon goes, I have gone without out both and didn't really notice a huge difference. It is good to help polish the water and make it look better but in my experience I wouldn't call it a necessity. Try running with out and see how it goes. You can always put it back online.

I don't use it on a regular basis. In fact I find that my tank looks better without it. I think the real reason for that is actually my fault. I don't think that I keep it changed out enough and keep the reactor fresh. So it really ends up building up into a detritus sink and that's never good. But now that I think of it even when I do a good job at it I still have a better time keeping my tank without running it. I have the SpectraPure duel media reactor and I have it turned off right now because the cases get so clogged up that it's just worthless to use.
