When do you replace a pump?

How can you tell is is time to replace a pump? All my pumps appear to be working fine. I take them apart and clean them seasonally. But they are pushing three years old. Do pumps gradually lose flow? Do you need to replace parts periodically? I do have a spare pump in case one pump dies for any reason.

Thanks for your replies!

When the motor burns up is when it is time to replace the pump.......if it is something like a hammerhead or iwaki yu can keep it forever just replacing the pump and motor as they burn up......as far as replaceable parts...just replace them as they break (impellars/shafts/etc,)

The better you maintain them the longer you will go between replacements....
