When freshwater meets saltwater!

Sorry to hijack but I would love to have some red swordtails in my fowlr. Is there any evidence that platies and swordtails do OK in saltwater? I'm willing to try it but I don't want to hurt any fish.

Just a FYI; you can acclimate almost any livebearer (guppies, swordtails, platies) to full s/w. You just have to acclimate them a lot slower than you would mollies.

Honestly no idea... I've read on other threads on different sites its possible... I was thinking of adding orange sword tails to mine... (And hijack away were after the same basic things

Stupid house issues... I have to speed up the time these guppies are acclimating so I'm doing 3 water changes and adding more salt each week... Sunday Tuesday and Thursday are the days I have in mind...

Alright so I got a little impatiant... the water the guppies are in is at. 012 salinity so i decided to do a 24 hour drip on 2 guppies (1 male and 1 female) the drip is complete and the two are free in the tank! I'm not seeing signs of stress as of yet so I'm viewing this as a good sign! In 48 hours if the two are still well I'll do a 24 hour drip with the rest of my guppies...

Its about lights out time but so far its been an hour and the two seem to be loving the tank! They are exploring all the rock work and weaving in and out of the little tunnles they are finding! In 48 hours if they are still alive and kicking I'll be adding the rest of my guppy crew to the tank

Mollies and angelfish would be the easiest I imagine. Good luck! I have actually contemplated adding some black mollies to my sw tank.

The Mono Sebae or something like it was the type of angelfish I was referring to. Not really a fw angel but looks a lot like one.

ok, Whats the point of doing tis exactly? Why not just keep guppies and mollies in a freshwater tank? or keep saltwater and saltwater fish? whats the point of acclimating one to the other?

In the 70's, we would often cycle tanks with mollies. And as a former livebearer keeper, I can tell you they all do better with some salt in the water. Goldfish like some salt too...... never tried full strength saltwater though.

I feel bad in saying I heard fw fish acclimated to sw lived shorter lives after all the excitement in this thread (I too want fancy guppies, that would be awesome!). But I just heard it, that's all :/

If you want fancy guppies and angels and mollies, setup a freshwater tank, if you want cool fish that are pretty. go with a reef tank. simple.

After reading this thread I did a google search to see what the limitations are. It seems there are people that keep common MTS in full saltwater. Anyone on here doing this? I am curious to see if they continue to breed and if they are able to consume marine algae. Learn something new everyday
