Where do you put your Heater?

I keep mine in the sump, but it is plugged into my Apex controller. I had a faulty heater that got the tank temp up to 99 degrees and killed half my livestock before I figured out what happened. I will always have the heater on the controller and two thermometers from now on. I use a submersible Fluval heater.

return section of my sump after the probes. That way the system does a full loop to ensure proper temp throughout the system. Chiller return also in the return section.

Used to have it in my sump, but now I have an AIO tank so I have it in the chamber with the constant water level (chamber 2 in my Nuvo 10).

Honestly I don't think it matters much as long as the heater will stay submerged should something unusual happen to the tank.

Wow, that's something I've never seen before. Brilliant.

mine are similar to this but with acrylic holder does not look as clean . ohh i have 4 500w heaters ran on a heater/chiller controllers. They are in my Skimmer chamber as the water level never changes in that location.

Thanks again, all. I think I'll try it in either my protein skimmer chamber or in the return pump. I like the idea of having the heater after the probes so it's more consistent throughout the system. Having it within 1" of my return and emergency drain just makes me very uncomfortable...especially since the Mrs is not a huge proponent of this new hobby. If something were to go wrong, I'm sure I'd be found stuffed into the tank as fish food.

Since I'm new I'm unsure as to the actual heat output per the radius of the 300w heater; what's considers the "danger zone" and what's not. The return chamber of the reefer 170 isn't massive, if the heater is within an 1" or 2" of the pump do you think there is a chance of it melting the return pump? Albeit I'd rather have that than the drains in the tank.

I don't think it would be an issue. Just make sure they aren't touching.

Although, I don't have any experience with that powerful of a heater. Most of mine have been <150w.
