Where Does my Watchman Go?

I've had a watchman goby for about four years, and he disappears for months (even years) at a time. Yesterday, he re-appeared after an eight-month absence. I thought he was dead for sure. He'll probably be around for a couple of months before he disappears again. Where does he go? What does he eat?

He probably hides in a cave somewhere and eats food that floats by in a back entrance to his cave. Is he with a pistol shrimp?

My yellow watchman does the same thing. I do occasionally see it at night when I look in the tank. I'm assuming it's feasting on pods since it's pretty fat and at nite there are tons of pods running around.
