Hobby is expanding at a rapid rate, faster than I’ve seen it in 40 years.
Some move on, some come back, things have a way of coming full circle.
Today, not so much, but I do see some “heavyweights” logging in more these days.
Sometimes a million peoples answers are just confusing, your looking for a few “seasoned” answers, not 52 yes and 195 nos

There are some members on this site I’ve been reading for years. Very knowledgeable and practical. Helped me so much over the years, so “heavyweights” is my slang for experts.
You would be one of those! Ha!

It seems that r2r is starting to dwindle too.
All the heavyweights that once made that site worth frequenting are mostly gone. Now a days, most of the traffic there is fluff, ie. what's your favorite... who uses xyz? Etc etc.
When I stumbled on this thread, I was hoping to get a glimpse of where the heavyweights ended up...
Mostly on Facebook I believe.
I think the "next generation" have already moved on to IG and TikTok. Many old salts (heavyweights) I still know don't want to engage online anymore. Everyone else is on R2R, or some discord server, or reddit, etc. Our hobby is very fractured, at least the online part.

I think the advancement of social media has made it difficult to actually share the knowledge and experience some people have. On the old forums if you posted a question and someone responded saying I killed flatworms by dropping a hair dryer at each end of my reef and connecting them to my Radions, and they had 11k posts and photos of their mature and impressive reef you would think -- How many hair dryers does my wife have. But now a days you ask for help and you get a huge onslaught of repsonses. Your question might be simple like, "Do you turn off some of your flow pumps at night?" You're going to get 100 responses 25 are going to be 'I use Jebao pumps cause they are cheap.', 25 are going to be 'What kind of controller are you using to do that?' 25 are going to be 'I thought about doing that, but I only have a return pump in my sub 20g tank, do you think I should shut that off at night. 10 are going to be - ' I'm doing almond milk and the colors and growth of my Goldfish are out of this world. The remaining 15 responses might be on point, but some one with 25 years of running different flow schedules at night is going to be contradicted by someone who is cycling their first 15g but read online that the water in the ocean is always moving. And the original poster has no idea the experience or knowledge behind any of these answers.
And the throw in Google with AI and you can get alot of answers you need without having to read 100 responses.
We used to post on these forums photos of our successes. But with social media there is such a slew of incredibly sharp, focused and bright aquarium photos that we wish we could point - shoot - share. But what's the point because we could never take a photo that looks like that.

Im back after many years and I cant seem to find any of the groups anymore! Its a shame if they went to FB. Maybe easier to manage but there is so much knowledge on this platform.

As others have said, social media platforms have definitely taken from a lot of what the forums once used to offer.

I never found a better source of info online than RC. I think FB does a terrible job serving the hobbyist. Its aim is to make money at the expense of knowledge. Making money is ok but moderators here allowed both to coexist.
I miss the hobby but also enjoy my kayak, fishing boat, pontoon boat and travel trailer. We left SoCal in 2020 for Idaho. We have rivers, lakes and reservoirs everywhere here. Being retired we can launch our boats without a reservation and almost never another boat at the same ramp.
When the state only has 2 million total it’s a slower life.
