Where to buy magnesium sulphate or chloride locally?

I need to raise my mag and am sick of buying expensive products to do so. I have been to 2 Home Depot's that didn't have either, where can I find it? Also I use calcium chloride, I've read that it might be better for me to use mag sulphate instead?

Bulk Reef Supply sells their stuff on Ebay and almost no one ever bids on it. You can't definitely get that stuff cheaper there than you can from their website.

Try the chemical store in West Sac.

Siera chemical I think it is called.

Chris

Yup :)

Mpoletti had like 400 lbs of the mag flake in garage at one time. It was pretty funny

I think its all gone though. Your best bet is to give them a call :)

Jim, it was 500 :D

as expensive as this hobby is, maybe it might be more cost efficient to just buy a home next to the ocean...

But then you'll have to worry about parasites or your livestock being eaten or escaping!

What about epsom salts? Is that OK to use in a pinch?

No, you just have lots of windows and the ocean becomes your aquarium! I thought the bad thing about Epson salts was that it isn't pure? I could be wrong though

But I thought there were some buffers in them? If I were you Tina, I'd listen to Mark though since I'm a noob!

*Edit*

Epson Salts are hydrated not anhydrous, but that's what we want anyways. I stand corrected and bow down to you Master Poletti. One day, I hope to aspire to be a Jedi Master like you! ;)

Last time I did a group buy on MgCl2 and CaCl2, I got it from Sierra Chemical in West Sacramento. I was selling it for about $5 for $5 lbs or something like that.

Some people recommend that you actually use a combination of magnesium chloride and magnesium sulphate to raise your magnesium level. The theory was that if you used only magnesium sulphate, you would drastically increase the sulphate level in your tank. If you use only MgCl2, you would raise the chloride level in your tank.

Yep, it is recommended as a 5:1 ratio when dosing. Closer to 10:1 when using a CA reactor.

The company I work for sells 50# bags of magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt).
