Where to drill my tank

I plan to drill my Oceanic 75 gallon tank, however I have never done this before. I have watched many video's on how to install, however non of them have identified the best location to drill. Are there any suggestions or should I just pick a loation to drill for my sump. Towards the top or bottom, etc?

Also what size hole would be best for a 75 gallon?
Thanks

Well, where you cut the holes is determined first by what type of over flow you plan on using. This also determines how many holes you will need to cut. The size of the plumbing, and consequently the size of the bulkhead hole, is determined by the flow rate you are targeting. So let's get the horse before the cart here.:)

I figure 750 gph (after head loss) is fine for your tank. (for the sump system.)

Drilling the tank is easy, I bought a bit and just followed instructions. I was afraid to break the glass but went really good; most 48" RR tanks are drilled for 1" drain and 3/4" return if I recall right; I have a 70G Oceanic drilled with two 1.5" bulkheads; overkill? yeah but peace of mind too (that's the way I bought the tank).
Due to water pressure being more at the bottom, drilling anywhere on the top would be a safer alternative. I like add on OF Boxes to be on the center for 48" tanks and off either side by few inches for smaller tanks.
Threaded bulkheads if you plan on it to be fully dissembled at some point and always use teflon tape on threads.

Thanks guys. I guess my problem is that i do not know what kind of oerflow system to install. The last time I used this tank i had a cpr overflow that would constantly loose siphon. Im not doing that again. Any overflow suggestions to get me started? Thanks for your responses..

Check glass-holes.com they have neat OF boxes and full kits; some glass places can drill it for about $20 a hole

I made this little box out of scrap plexi and some black egg-crate then drilled the tank and the outcome was nice.

How many holes can you drill in the glass before it get weak, and how close together can they be?

Really depends on the thickness of the glass, sizes of holes, and amount of holes.

IME, a 30/40/50 breeder is MAXED out with two 1.5" holes in any piece of glass closer than 5" together. Thats 1/4" glass, w/two big holes cut in it. Does not sit well with me.

The way i think about it is like this, atleast 2" from any side for holes under 1.5". So the highest you could put any hole is 2" from the top of the frame/edge of glass.

Nice overflow!

Did you paint the eggcrate, or buy black?

Said he used black eggcrate. Where did you get black? I've looked everywhere for it!

Thanks!

I've used the router to make the teeth but found the egg-crate as a very useful simple thing and Weldon 16 works great on it. Black plexi scraps are not as common to find in the "Scrap Bin" so whenever I spot some 1/4" just grab it; comes in handy.
TAP Plastics, just check the web for one near you or a similar plastics specialty place, HD, Lowes Ace do not carry black that I've seen, only white and chromed.

If I remember correctly, if you have multiple holes, they need to placed with the diameter of the hole equal to the distance between holes and edges of glass.

Example (since that didn't make much sence in my head): 2" holes must be 2" apart from each other (that's the edges of circle, not center), and also 2" from any edge of glass.
