where to get 6" or 8" schedule 80 unions?

actually biggest they have is 4" and thats 55$. if you did find a 6 or 8 you could be talking 75-100$ each. you might want to alter the design...

considering how much an 8' skimmer is running for...a $75 to $100 fitting is pretty good as it will be the crux of my project.

yep,

it will ease the pain of servicing the skimmer significantly.

plus,

i am anticipating of not using a collection cup and having the skimmate blow directly into a modified collection tube.

i designed it to be a semi-pressurized skimmer, like a weak beckett...thus the union is the intergral part of the design.

but i would like it to be about 8' high (just the reactor tube and not including the collection tube) with about 700gph flow through it and have a sweetwater air pump pressurizing the thing.

I think the member BlueStag has a brand new 4" Spears Union he never used. Hit him up. He was talking about making a skimmer but never got around to doing it. He's local OC.

why sched 80? is it under that much pressure?

nah,

schedule 80 is just more durable for constant putting on and taking off.

i am guesstimating that if i make this humungo skimmer myself (with a little help from my friends), two should less be less than a big beckett. and let's not talk about the operating cost! :D

sched 80 wont make any difference with durablity really it will just withstand higher pressures .i think 40 will hold fine no?

yeah,

schedule 40 should be okay.

jus' wanna make this thing bulletproof...for the sake of...ummm...making it bulletproof! :)

I have a 4" I would sell for $25.00 bucks. paid over 50 for it and its new, but I odered it and cannot return it

thanks for the generous offer but i need a six or eight inch union. :)

my becketts have key flanges and i am totally SICK of undoing a gazillion screws to clean my already huge skimmer. then i have to screw on the same gazillion screws back on.

the union simplifies not only cleaning but potential for leaks and other problems.

here is one of my own philosophical quotes:

'it is much harder and complicated to do things simply'

i get the analogy from this observation.

a certain mechanical watchmaker company spent ten years in R&D developing their own mechanical chronograph timepiece. this is while the trend was for other watch companies to 'boast' that their chronograph watches had way more 'complications' than the other guy.

what made me laugh was one guy bought his $40k chronograph watch (watch collecting btw makes reefing seem like a penny hobby) that touted to have one of the most complicated (lots and lots of parts, pieces and gears) chronographs. well, after about 9 presses of the start and stop buttons...the watch breaks. to say that is hilarious is an understatement.

the company that researched their chronograph design for 10 years not only uses about 1/3 of the parts of the other companies but is more accurate, holds a wind longer (how many days it can go before needing winding) and is profoundly durable (able to take horrific forces and conditions that would destroy the other 'complicated' watches).

they 'retail' for 1/10th the cost of the other 'complicated watches' but they are not to be found anywhere on any shelf in the known world unless you really 'know' someone.

it is the only production watch that sells new for double to triple of the retail price that i know of.

that is why i am not 'impressed' with bubbleking (etc) skimmers. just because something has a high price tag does not even remotely resemble that you are going to get something of superior design, quality and performance in the real world. i have so many other interests that easily back up my statement.
