Where to get acrylic rods..

I am thinking about using some acrylic rods in my aquascaping to help make shelfs and pillars, since doing BB i have to try and keep as little touching bottom as possible. So where can I find them locally? I am in east orlando, thanks. Also, other suggestions besides acrylic rods for this purpose?

start here:

Sanjay's thread

Look through the next 3-5 pages. He started building pillars with cpvc, went to acrylic and finally settled on fiberglass rods.

You can get the rods here:

1/2" fiberglass rods

They have different diameter ones but that's the size I used.

I also used quickrete hydraulic cement from Lowe's as opposed to thorite. It dries VERY quickly.

It sounds like the same product used to pull wire in wall. Only I think those are more like a 1/4" fiberglass rod but they would still work. You can get them at home depot in the electrical section. Plus they are like neon green or glow in the dark. Although they are probably alot more expensive cause they are porpuse built for pulling wire.

The ones I used are very rigid. I would assume that ones designed to pull wire would be very flexible and not suitable for building rigid structures.

Good thing is they are local. I just called about the rod, for my own use....they have 3/8 diameter clear acrylic rod for $2.50 per foot...I think I'm going to pick up about 3 feet for my own upcoming project.

MitchReef >> I went by there yesterday around 4:15, finally found them (around back of building w/no sign) and no one was there. Did I go to right place? I would think coat hangers aren't rigid enough to support rock. Any other ideas or places?

I use the replacement acrylic rods used for window shades. They are more octagonal than round. That actually worked better for me. You can get them in clear 5/16"x 2' at Home Depot for about a buck.

that is a great idea, will look for them! what could i cut them with? I am going to need them in a variety of sizes, thanks

The directions are wrong....damn, they are on the front of the building now....the address changed in the actual listing, but the online still shows them at the original address....I shoul have said to call them first for directions, sorry....I would suggest making sure that what ever you use is acrylic, as styrene is used in a LOT of household goods and styrene is an algae farmer's dream!

how would i know if the window shade rods are pure acrylic and safe? man, that sucks! I'm not going to have a chance to get to longwood again anytime before doing tank..guess i should have drove around more..

thanks for the offer but think i'm going to go with the blind rods from home depot. my next few days are so jampacked would just be easiest to stop by home depot cause i have to go there for more pvc anyway. any idea how to cut those to size?

I would think any type of saw or saw blade would do it....I would go with a fairly fine tooth count. If you go into Home Depot the tool guy should be able to point you to something. Should be pretty cheap, and easy to cut....

I can't speak for any except the ones that I bought. They've been in my tank for a long time with no ill affects. I think that the packaging that mine came in said what they were made of.

jade2122, make sure you post some pics of the new aquascaping...I'm intrigued by the use of the rods and would like to see how you (and anyone else for that matter) use them...
