Where to get hydrotesting?

There is a place in Dublin let me see if I can find the info for you...

Heath's Welding Supply
6743 Dublin Boulevard Suite 24
Dublin, CA 94568
(925) 829-5510

They will take expired tanks and trade up for current hydros for a small fee.. Or you can have it sent out if you want to keep your tank...

don't know if you can get them done at scuba stores as many divers hydro these air tanks every 5 years. cost is $35-$50 range was the last time i checked a couple of years ago.

Thanks for all your help guys. I really appreciate the effort. I found a place that is pretty cheap. Carbonic Service in Santa Clara does the hydrotest and fill for roughly $35. Pretty good deal if you ask me for a 20 lbs tank, since the tank was practically free. Only downside is it takes about 2 weeks turn around for the hydro. I don't believe they do it in-house, hence the 2 weeks. Anyway, just thought I'd throw out this info.

I called Hansen just out of curiosity and they quoted me $25 for the hydro and $20 for the fill. I'm not sure I believe them though, because a couple of months ago I brought a 5 lbs tank to fill and they charged me $20. I don't think it will cost the same to fill a 5 lbs or a 20 lbs, unless the lady misunderstood me, but I specifically said 20lbs. They supposed to have changed ownership, and prices have changed. Higher prices, that is. Having said all that, I'm bringing it to Carbonic :)

Officiall, or legally speaking ... what interval doe the tanks HAVE TO be hydro tested? Can you just have it refilled until the re-filler requires a hydrotest?

Alternatively, if you swap tanks, you are probably guaranteed a tank that is legally hydrotested. I'm assuming gas places can't swap you a tank that fails hydrotesting or is outside of it's hydro-test time limit?

I believe steal tanks need to be hydrotested every 3 yrs and aluminum ones 5 yrs, but don't quote me on that. I think by law the refiller is supposed to visually check the bottle for any damage and the hydro date prior to filling. If it's expired they won't fill it of course. Some places will allow you to bring an expired bottle and swap you with a hydrod and filled one. Of course they will charge you the price of the hydro and fill. So far from what I've found the prices range from $15 - $25 for hydro and $7.50 - $20 for fills.

I hope you mean "steel" tanks! ;)

I guess the best thing is to simply ask the re-filler when you bring the tank in.

Refiller will definitely NOT fill a tank that is passed the hydrotesting requirement date, unless the filler is your friend. :D

Sorry! I was just trying to be funny ;)

My tank was hydro'ed before I bought it, but I think it's steel. It's a 20lb tank, but that just means it holds 20lbs of CO2, the filled tank is remarkably heavy. It's also remarkably old, there is some writing on that indicates that it was first hyrdo tested in 1969 or something like that! In anycase, I have no problem with taking it to a "swap" place...any tank I get in return is probably an upgrade!

I wonder why steel tanks need more frequent testing...is the C02 corrosive to steel or something? Like I said, my tank is ancient, so it can't be that bad.

Steel and aluminum tanks are both 5 years.. The fiber wrapped tanks like the paintballers use and firefighter rescue guys have are tested every 3 years... A lot of places will just take your out of date tank and swap for a currently hydro'd one for the price of the fill...

For the pricing, 20lb tanks are normally only 3-9 dollars more than a 5lb tank.. You get way more bang for your buck out of the 20lber..
