where to get nps

fullmonti

now is the time
I have ask several people where they get the beautiful nps corals they post pix of. I have gotten a Very few specific answers other than liveaquaria & cherry corals, mostly some thing vague like from a importer.

So if you would please. Tell us where specifically (names, links & such) you get those beauties?

Sharing is good for the soul.

I have been checking those & a few other sites for many mouths. Some of them will have the same two or three nps corals listed for weeks or mouths on end. LA has one or two unusual nps peaces a mouth. We all have seen people post pix of there tanks with dozens of different nps in them, many of which I have never seen offered on a website, & my LFS only gets the very common ones in.

So please share with us all.

Some of the awesome NPS corals on LA are sold within hours sometimes minutes.
There certainly are awesome corals on DD.

I will say this, tracking down rarer species of non-photosynthetic corals is not that easy but not impossible or cheap. It takes effort daily of searching & networking to make it happen. This holds true with everything in the hobby; rare fish, corals, inverts. Not to sound like a jerk but there isnt some magical store where all the rare stuff is at and we are keeping it from everyone. If your LFS can not get in for you what you are looking for, you should check sponsors of this site. Subscribe to their livestock updates if you are not doing so already. Look for sponsors that are bringing in highend corals or azoox corals to start with and see what they can do for you or can get for you.

You take Live Aquaria for example, when you subscribe to their updates, you will get an email around lunch time what most likely will be posted that evening. If you see a azoox coral listed that you might be interested in, look out for the evening update, if nothing interests you, move on to a different site. LA will not post something in the evening that isnt listed on the earlier email. Rare stuff can go in minutes, if not seconds, so it comes down to speed. Have your cart all set up and ready for check out prior to the update (I would normally put something in my cart that I am not planning to buy to hold the cart open). You learn to know the average time shops post their new livestock so you know when to look out for items. Have everything linked up in your cell phone. You can also ask shops via email or phone what days they are expecting in shipments of livestock and from what geographical location.

I agreee with mike. You need to search for the good stuff, that's waht makes it fun...lol I'm lucky and I have several good LFS in my area or within an hour and they bring stuff in for me on ocassion. Looking forward to my Tube sponge this weekend...:)

I actually saw that one in time to get it, but my wife lost her job about a month ago & I hate to pay $30 to ship one item. Maybe next time.

I guess I didn't want to believe LA was the best single source for livestock, or at least was hoping. I do check there site just about every evening, just as it is posted, much of the sps I have came from them. I wasn't really aware of the notification systems, I will look into them. I have talked to my LFS before (it really is a FISH store not a reef store) about me going with them to Atlanta to the wholesaler there. I checked back with them today & I'm in for next trip.

WSI2406 I'm glad you added the lol after the "that's what makes it fun" part.

If any one does have a name or link for a good source please chime in.

Thank you Jim

Jim, Kevin at LA does have some excellent sources for corals (he also has a nice Azoox tank himself) you can also check with these RC sponsors; Phishy Business, Cherry Corals, Aqua Technology, Reef Odyssey (if I missed anyone here on RC, I am sorry). Trust me, they have items in stock but not posted up on their sites, doesn't hurt to ask. You know what, if you are a satisfied customer with their services, it doesn't hurt to throw business their way either. Whether on the forums or local reef meets, when you hook your favorite shops up with more business, it is a win win situation.

check with your local reef clubs (including this site)
most are more than willing to hook you up ---no shipping, either!

I'm the only one in local club who keeps nps. But think I'll check again with Atlanta reef club, first time I ask only got a couple people that had some sun corals in a mixed reef tank. Can't help but think there must be some nps keepers in a town that big.
