Space is an issue if I don't empty tank. Without moving only 4 inches between tank and wall

Also I've seen that cleaner cut is acheived on inside which is more important for watertight seal.

Go from the inside. Get plumbers putty and mold a catch like shaped like half of a birds nest it will stick to the glass and come off easy.

I know I maybe too late but I would go the used food barrel route . Don't get me wrong , I use trashcan barrels too but they have been seasoned overtime . New ones tend to have the plastic smell that I don't like . If you can smell it then it must be must be emitting volatile petroleum compounds . My old ones that have scale don't smell anymore

No I'm not drilling for a few days. The barrel I got was used for storing tomatoes in a plastic liner.
