where to put overflow box?

im in the planning stages of a 120x30x30 plywood tank. the back will have to sit tight against the wall. so i'm going to build internial overflows on the ends. the hard part is trying to make the overflows work with the two surge tanks.
if you have any questions about plywood tank construction kent E built a 96x36x30. give him a shout i'm sure he would be happy to answer any questions.

jcanute, are you putting them on the ends like how I described running the width of the tank? It just seems like the best option for me.

The 180 that I have from Sanjay has overflow about 5' of the tank internally. The water from that goes through two cuts each a foot to the bigger overflow outside the tank. It is really nice and it makes the tank look a lot bigger than it is and lots of space. If fish went through it they stay in the second overflow outside. Sanjay had a pair of Akyndinos in there and he kept frags in there too.

I PM'd you and asked for more info on the overflow and also pics if possible. I was also wondering what kind of silencing can you get going with these forms of overflows? Since a normal durso wouldn't work. Thanks. ~Matt

yeah thats what i will do. i will cut vetical slots for the changing water level due to surge tanks. the tanks wont be timed so i have design them for + or - 4" change in water level or about 60 gallons. kent E has internal coast to coast on the back of his tank. i will try to find a pic to post.

here's some pics. the tank is cloudy becase it right after we moved everything into it from his 120.

here is the box at the end of the coast to coast. you could do a intrnal c to c and put the box on the side of the tank.

when i get over ther again i'll get better pics.

thanks for the link. Just so I have this straight, the overflow runs coast to coast and then drains into two corner overflow boxes. Is that the right concept?

i think the one spazz made drains out the back. i see no reason why you cant go out the sides. i thought about doing that with mine. but i think it will be easier in my application to put the overflow and drains on the ends.

I think I like the idea of having it on the sides also. It will still give me more than enough area for the amount of water I need to pass through it.
