Anyone know a good place in Sarasota, FL to get a Sand Sifting Sea Star? I went to my LFS (Coral Connection), and he told me they hardly ever get them in. I have a decent CUC now, however I could use some more sand cleaning friends.
Well there are several species of sand sifting star that you can collect locally if you can't find them at the LFS.
However, these animals are not suited to captivity and are not beneficial to a tank. They are predators of sandbed fauna and as a result, they usually cannot find enough to eat in captivity and they are counter-productive when it comes to actually cleaning the sandbed (as opposed to burying the mess).
Marine Dreams or Jeff's in Bradenton have them from time to time. But have to agree with greenbean, probably just going to die slowly. If you want a sand sifter try maybe a sand sifting goby.
