At the risk of offering too much information .....
Have you considered either the resplendent or randalls? They are almost identical in appearance, and are (IMO/E) quite a bit easier to keep than either the smithies or flavos. I've got a group in QT right now and have had no trouble at all getting them all to eat.
Pictures include a pair of smithies and the seven resplendents.
I'd expected to lose at least a couple, so if you lived closer I actually would But they have all done well so far. I'm feeding them many times a day to get weight back on. Next test will be putting them into the main display in a few weeks.

Thanks, and isn't that always the case - things we desire are often too far away...
I am still feeding my lone male twice per day (while at 76 degrees F), and he is slowly looking better in the ventral region. I was actually thinking of moving him into the display sooner rather than later.
Hey Simon, are you keeping your smithies at subtropical temps? After doing more research it's leading me to believe my 80 degree sometimes up to 82 degree is not the right enviornment for these deepwater anthias. If it is possible to keep them at higher temps I may pull the trigger still but resplendent and randalls have been on my radar as well, I've just never seen them available at my LFS and I hate ordering online when I get them much cheaper at my LFS.
So, in the past when I have had smithies, they were kept successfully in a chiller-equipped reef tank that was rock solid at 78 - Summer or Winter. In my current tank, sans chiller, it's 78 most of the year, but probably creeps up to 82 a few time during the Summer. The pair I have at the moment are in QT at 78, so they have not experienced 82. I suspect thay will be fine for those short periods, but only time will tell. sorry I cannot be more definitive.
