I am stocking a 500 gallon reef and I think that I would like to put a school of anthias in the tank. I have not had much experience with them and would like to start with a hardy and inexpensive variety of anthias. What would your suggestions be? Everything that i hear is that they need alot of food. How true is this? the tank is fed pellets automatically once a day and receives mysis several days a week. Will this do?

thanks in advance.

I've always liked the Lyretail Anthias. Maybe you could give them a try.

Also, I would try to feed other kinds of food to your fish, not just pellets and mysis, for nutritional reasons. Also, depending on how much you feed at a time, feed 1-3 times per day.

they do get other food. That is just the staple foods. I am looking for what is hardy, not necessarily what someone likes.

I would agree with lyretails - they are pretty hardy as Anthias go. Multiple feedings will be required at first, maybe 4 - 5 times a day. When the fish replenish their 'bulk' only 1 -2 feeds a day is necessary imo.

There are a few more more Anthias which are considered hardy but Lyretails are the ones I have experience with.

For such a large tank, have you maybe thought about mixing in some of the larger species (redstripe, squarespot) would be nice with lyretails.
