Was wondering which camera to get the nikon d5000 or d40 ? or is there a different brand that may be better around the same money..Also this will be my first real camera !!!!lol

i purchased a few days ago a nikon p90 digital camera and fell in love with taking pictures with it!!!!So now Im ready to jump up to the slr cameras and start taking some real pics...If anyone can steer me in the right direction with what to get itll be greatly appreciated!!!!

Which camera? The one that you will actually shoot with.

There are many folks who buy nice cameras and end up not using them because they're too big, too complicated, etc. Therefore the best camera is the one you will actually enjoy using.

These cameras are in two different levels. The D5000 replaced the D60 and the D3000 replaced the D40. If you have the budget, go with the D5000 (way more features, more AF points, bigger LCD, movie mode, swivel LCD, etc)

The D5000 kit is also $800. You can get a D40 kit for about $300.
