I think that lighting would work pretty well for most any clam. Some, like the croceas and maximas, you might want to put up in the tank, but a 75 isnt that deep, so a 250 w MH should penetrate quite well.

you musta never kept a Squamy for any significant length of time. in 8 yrs i had one go from 4" to larger then a football and would no longer fit in a 55, put it in the 180 and it got 14+ inches and played hell on Ca demands. Squamosa (and Giga) grow to Huge size in the home aquariums if kept under optimal conditions and much quicker then a Derasa.

i guess huge is relative.
the squamosa doesn't grow any larger than the maxima ( max 18", average around 12" ) and doesn't reach the maximum size of a derasa ( up to 24" ) or the monster gigas ( up to 54" ).
the derasa actually has a higher min. growth rate ( approx. 1/4" difference ) per year and the squamosa has a slightly higher max. growth rate ( approx. 1/2" difference ) per year. so while there is a slight difference and under optimal conditions the squamosa might grow a little faster, it still would not likely outgrow the derasa in over all size.
i stand by my first answer. a crocea ( up to 6" ) for the small tank size but if he wants to go a little bigger, squamies are easier to keep than a maxima and he likes them

i looked back, it was just barley over a year ago you got your first clam, a 'Wild Sun Crocea' and was asking for information on it yet shortly after that you became an expert in clams. with that said, I stand by my previous comment that you have very little experience with keeping clams especially long term.

Dangerous way to think. If this is your criterion, I say delay, and dont get a clam. It sounds as if your trying to just keep your head above water. Get stronger lights and eliminate the need for "forgiveness", and then move forward.

there are times when opinions expressed are made on what one has read and not what they have experienced first hand and it's obvious by their expression. it'd be like a 16 yr old telling which over the road truck was the better ride, it's hard to make a legitimate suggestion with no personal experience to base that on.

where do i proclaim to be a clam expert? i gave an opinion based on the params given.
and this is relevant how? does anyone else think that a crocea is a really bad idea?

and yes you are right i did back up my comments with information found in books and on web pages. as you have pointed out i am not an expert and that is why i quoted information published by the experts. that doesn't change the fact that a derasa clam has the potential to grow larger than a squamosa
i don't think it is that hard to give a suggestion. lots of light and smaller tank, to me that sounds like a good tank for a smaller clam like a crocea. ( and unfortunately your opinion of my experience level or legitimacy to post a reply in this thread really doesn't matter to me. )
