Hello all just wondeirng what clown I shouild be looking for to host my rbta... The percula's and ocellaris were not listed as being compatible with an rbta... I've had suggestions of a clarkii or tomato.. Are there any others...

Although Rbta’s may not be the natural host for Perc’s, my pair took to the Rbta the moment they went into the tank. It is my understanding that most will, especially if they were wild caught.

FYI, I have had my RBTA over 2 years now and I have tried about 8 different false percs with it, and not one of them took to it. People say oh, just wait and they will eventually try it out. Well I have waited this long and not yet, but I get the feeling that if I had put a tomato or cinnamin clown or even a clarki clown in there, they would go into it without hessitation.

Maroon Clowns seem to host BTA readily.

I added a Marron Clown to my reef and it dove into the BTA with a couple of hours and now wont leave the poor thing alone!

Were your percs tank raised or live caught?

My LFS recommended a tomato clown as well.. I went and looked at a couple today.. I had one previously but it was a little too vicious for a 10g...

well I would think any clown would be vicious in a 10 gallon tank.

Nikon, --- my clowns were tank raised. I dont see the point in buying clowns that aren't, ... they are so readily available now as tank-raised, why take them from the ocean anymore, ...

Tomato clowns
Bicinctus
black ocellaris

These are just my preferences...I had a pair of black percs with a RBTA and they made a nice display.

I think that many problems people have with clowns hosting in anemones are due to the fact that most tank-raised clowns don’t know that they’re supposed to live in an anemone.

I'm going to experiment with using synthetic anemones in my grow out tank to see if I can get fry used to the idea of living in that environment.

You might try melanopus, similar looking to a tomato but a little less viscious IME and good hosters (again IME)

BTW: wild caught v. captive bred has not been shown to make a difference in hosting propensity. Some folks have had this experience anecdotally but there is not a significant body of evidence to support it as a general rule yet.

Where would I find a melanopous Dan?? I can come down your way if there is a LFS that you frequent that may have them... I am in the eastbay but work in the city...

Aquarium Concepts has some at times. You can also call and check with dolphin pet village. Dolphin also had a lot of CB ephippium last time I was there. They mostly looked pretty healthy. They also had a bunch of CB bicinctus which isn't on topic but was cool none the less....

I don't know if ephippium are very aggressive because I've never kept them....

Good luck.

I ended up getting a cinnamon tomato.. 45 minutes in the tank and voila.. I come downstairs and can't find her.. I didn't look right in front of me all camoed in my anemone... She was in there looking like she wanted to attack me when I got close....

I was at Aquarium Concepts and bought some return fittings and light bulbs.. They were closing so I went around the corner to Connies.. They had a 50% off all saltwater fish so I got it for $6
