Which corals will angelfish nip?

Angels are so pretty, and it's so disconcerting to a new reefer when they start to research them. They don't play well with each other, and they nip corals. Got it.

But do they nip ANY coral, or are certain corals more enticing to them than others. I know people say it's a 50/50 shot at getting one that leaves corals alone, but I know my luck. I'm pretty much set on my coral list... and now I'm looking to see if maybe an angel would be compatible with that list or not.

All help is appreciated.

I had a half black angel and he was fine with zoa's, mushrooms, a hammer, and SPS. As soon as I added a brain coral he attacked it like it was made of candy. He would not leave it alone. Needless to say the angel was gone the next day. I think "fleshy" corals are most likely to get picked on.

I'm particularly fond of the flame and coral beauty angels (not unusual as those seem to be very popular). If I had to pick one, I'd probably want the flame.

While I should have plenty of room for additional corals to be added later, my current plans are for: green star polyp, zoanthids, actinodiscus mushrooms, ricordea, sun coral LPS, and pink birdsnest SPS.

If they go after polyps/softies, most of my tank will be fair game. If they go after SPS the birdsnest would be a target, but I could maybe live without that coral. If they want fleshy LPS corals my sun coral would be in trouble, and I really want that one.

I had a Coral Beauty in a 46 with lots of softies and LPS. It never bother either. Unfortunately, it came up missing about a year into it's residency.

Flame angels are hit or miss with corals. If you keep them well feed they might not eat corals. Your green star polyp and zoanthids will be the first it will try to eat if it does.

I have 2 angels in my tank with Zoas, Xenia, and Star Polyps so far. They don't touch any of it. They do eat a bunch of my filter feeders on my LR, but they don't touch the corals.

In my experience with angels, it really varies from angel to angel as far as what they will pick on or leave alone.

I had an angelfish in the past that used to pick on everything. The two I have now, don't pick on anything. I hope that helps.

My buddy also had a flame in his tank that never picked on any of his corals. Just an FYI.

I do feed my fish everyday, so it may be that they are just not hungry enough to snack on the corals, but so far I'm happy with mine. They are the centerpeice of my tank.

Yeah, I've read about how some are always good and others are absolute terrors. I *really* like these fish, and should definately have room in my tank for one ... but I am trying to weigh the risk before adding it to my stocking list.
