Kind of want to start working on the rock work this weekend and only place that sells acrylic rods in town is about an hour away and isn't open on the weekend :(

i used the orange or white fiberglass rods with reflective tape at top.

even better way if not trying to create bridges etc is plastic coat hangers. cheaper, easier to cut etc....im sure you have a couple in the closet you could nab right now!

Are most white plastic coat hangers reef safe?

I know I'm being a little paranoid here...

yes, the thin ones are just a rubbercoating over wire which will eventually break down and then rust.

Fiberglass rods should be fine, they're fiberglass and a resin that's hardened. My issue with those home depot ones would be the reflective nature of them, what exactly is it that makes them reflective? Is it a zinc coating speckled on? Is it some other metal? It's not the same like a bike reflector that has half-cube shapes that reflect light back out the same way it goes in. If I could get a data sheet on them, maybe find out it's something inert then sure.

That said I'd use fiberglass over acrylic every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Acrylic is quite easy to snap and shear off, while little smaller nubs could hold weight, I'd worry that they snap if they're the sole way for support of a structure, and if you need longer pieces I wouldn't trust that one bit. I get my fiberglass rods at Tap Plastic, and they're not the reflective kind, but if you don't have a Tap Plastics (or similar) type of place near you then you might be out of luck.

I know you want to get started this weekend, but make sure you're making a choice you can live with first.

the reflective part is a tape applied by manf. at the top 6" of the rod or so. when i use them i just done use that part.

they are usually by the mailboxes and number/letter area at the big box stores.

Rest is just fiberglass?

I just re did my aquascaping using fiberglass rods that are 1/2". I got them at my local Grainger. I attached them to pavers from lowes. Then drilled my rocks and built it in the tank. Looks way better than before and I have about 75lbs of rock left over to sell. Very easy to do

I got these the other day. Anything to look out for in regards to paving stones? Do you guys silicone the bottom of the stones? Is dap 8642 ok?

I silicone the bottom of the pavers and let them set for 7 days to fully cure. Its thick when you put it on the bottom. I used GE1 silicone

I used coat solid plastic coat hangers and I haven't had any issues. I don't have them supporting any major weight just used them to pin rock together.
