Which fish should I get

+1.

The firefish in my tank hide for about a month, even during feeding time that I thought it was already dead. A month later, came out and normal again. Slight change in anything in the tank can cause them to hide in my experience.

It will probably depend on how safe/comfortable he feels. I got a fire fish in my tank for a few years now. He will sometimes get shy for a period then be back out again. Never have been able to figure why he does it.

i think this has been a misunderstanding, based off people using freshwater FISH and food for saltwater fish. i've seen a lot of debate back and forth, primarily in regards to people feeding goldfish to lionfish. the primary issue being an incorrect HUFA profile and possibility of fatty liver.

the other facet of this is feeding certain terrestrial plants like garlic or romaine lettuce, which is also apparently undesirable for long term health.

i think these two points have been conflated quite a bit, and many people have extended that to all foods.

i don't feel that using terrestrial versus freshwater versus marine foods as a blanket guideline is the correct way to go about it though.

for example, white worms are a mostly terrestrial worm, but provide an excellent nutritional profile:

this puts them pretty high up on the list as far as nutritional content:

http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/foods2.shtml

they're actually roughly on par with anchovies in that regard.

so i think making the broad statement "don't feed freshwater/terrestrial animals to marine animals" is an incorrect statement to make. there is considerably more to take in to consideration aside from where the food happens to reside.

Excellent post.

Saddle Valentini Puffer

Saddle Valentini Puffer

Hello Everyone,
I currently have a 37 gallon saltwater tank with
1 pecula clownfish
1 lubbock wrasse
1 royal gramma
1 firefish
1 chocolate chip starfish
1 blue leg hermit crab

I was wondering if I would be able to get a Saddle Valentini Puffer. They are listed at reef safe with caution on LiveAquaria and I wanted to get a few opinions.
Thanks

It will probably eat the crab and maybe pick at the starfish. As far a corals go, its really a toss up. The chocolate chip starfish isnt reef safe though.

No your tank is too small and too stocked

Plus the puffer can (being the key word) eat your starfish and hermits each puffer is different I had my saddle in my 90 with clams, coral, shrimp, etc etc for a year until he jumped out then again I had another one that decimated every invert in my tank

Puffers are hit and miss as far as reef safe goes

I have a Valentini thAt I was so hoping would play nice in my tank, but I just caught him nipping at my Derasa clam. So into my refugium he went! Such a neat fish! I will just have to enjoy him in there. On plus side they are very easy to catch with a net.

They're a really cool fish, I loved watching mine when it would perch on the rocks and rotate it's eyes looking around. They can get pretty aggressive when they mature, and you can pretty much never have any live shrimp in your tank.

Hawk fish will take out her is and shrimp. That is why they are listed as reef safe with caution.
Personally, I would say your full up in that 37g tank.
But that's just me.

I had a falco hawk in with a small clown, tiny one spot foxface, starry blenny, and orchid dottyback in a 57 gallon and he was like the devil. He hated the one spot and the dottyback. The clown kept an eye out for him and the starry blenny gave him a run for his money.

He was enjoyably to watch and a terrific eater, but I brought him back after a week or so. Maybe the flames are a bit more mellow? Good luck!

I know they are really cool! Do you think it would work in mine

It would be fine with the fish listed, but will gradually eat your cuc. Mine never got to my hermits but snails were fair game. I love valentinis though. And will have one in every tank I can.

Flame hawks are a lot like dwarf angels IMHO, they may or may not have or eventually develop bad behavior. I have a flame angel that developed an addiction for LPS that could never be satisfied, but I also have a flame hawk that, to date, has never paid attention to any of the shrimp. There are 2 cleaner shrimp, 1 fire shrimp and 4 peppermint shrimp that have never been bothered by "Doug" (my flame hawk).

Maybe the flames are a bit more mellow? Good luck!
