sorry for my ignorance but do you need to have the controller or can you just plug the fans directly into a wall outlet?

Out of the box you can just plug it in, and it will run at full speed. With a profilux and the breeze control unit you can set it to change speed and turn on/off based on tank temp.

with the cost of getting the controller and profilux...wouldn't it be better to just get a chiller?

No, because the chiller only cools and heats the tank. I've never seen a chiller that can do more than just...cool and heat a tank.

I found my 3 fan Propeller Breeze unit to be plenty to prevent the temp from going too high. The fans alone have saved me lots of money on buying and running a chiller.
