Which one will work, Purple Tang and a ....

I've posted other questions before and still haven't purchased any add'l fish (see my sig, 1 d barberi).

Will a Purple and a Chevron work together?

What about a Purple & a Chocolate (really like these!)?

I'm not going to buy for at least a month, so I have nothing but time... any other combo's are welcome, but I really like the purple so try to keep fish that are compatible with those.

I have a purple, powder brown, and chocolate mimic all living together peacefully. The only tang you really want to stay away from with a purple is a yellow because of the similar body shape.

In a 75, you might want to stick with just the purple. It will probably attack any other tang to death in a tank that small. I wouldn't suggest a purple tang for a 75 to begin with, but you sound like your mind's pretty much made up. Your sig says "75 gal for now" so maybe you could wait until you upgrade to add additional tangs?

PT are very agressive. One of my favorites but IME they do not do too well in a 75. Or I should say....tank mates do not do too well. PT will likely be VERY agressive. I would skip it.

I would not put a purple tang in a 75 -- I tried it, and it ended up drawing blood in my Clarkii -- just too darn aggressive for a small tank.

Ok, so what about a Chevron & a Chocolate... my mind isn't up, I'm gathering info.

The 75g is for now, the larger tank is in the works but a year down the road along with the rest of my study. If the PT will kill anything else I get between now and then, its out.

I'd say the Chocolate is too big a fish for a 75. You're definitely getting the chevron? Most folks would probably suggest only one tang for a tank that size (if you HAVE to have one for now) so I'd either stick with just the chevron, or pick between the chevron, kole, or other bristletooth...or maybe even a small yellow for now. I guess a small purple might work, but as mentioned would be the only tang. Which it should be. And it would need to be added last.

I would always purchase fish for the tank you have rather than the tank you hope to have. The smaller the tank, the greater the problem mixing tangs.

ok so only 1 tang. If that's the case can I get the purple? Can I add any other fish or will the purple fight them too? Maybe a larger wrasse (so my lion won't eat it)? Maybe a butterfly or a flame angel?

what fish

what fish

my question to everyone on this issues is,are you making a zoo or are you making an eco-system....i like eco-systems,so i pick a certain sea/ocean and run with it,im using only red sea/indian ocean fish so my tang of choice is the purple...and once i up grade to 180 ill add my favorite tang...the sohal...ill think its easier to put fish into a tank if their already living together in the wild....make a little sense...good luck...mike

I'd really rather you not put ANY tang in here, but if you're going to only do 1.

To your purple tang question, if it's not added last you'll prbably have issues. If you let the purple establish itself and then try to add even something like a diamond goby, it could be curtains for the new fish.

I say this not to be mean, but because I've lived it. Happened in a 90 gallon I setup in '03. I had a purple tang that beat the daylights out of a yellow watchman goby that was added after him. I learned a few things from this. One is that puprle tangs can be aggressive. Two is that they need to be added last. (depending on the tang list) Three was that the LFS sees you coming a mile away when you're trading in fish you don't want. And four is that even that 90 was too small for it.

So, how fast will a tang grow? If I add a purple, chocolate or chevron now and it's 2 1/2" how long until it is really crowded in my 75g? Do I have a year? 2? 3?

The larger tank will not be up until next summer, so I don't want to mess up my fish. However, my tank feels empty right now and I want some fish that swim around.

Also, thoughts about adding a flame? A dwarf angel can be left in this tank after my larger one is set up.
