Which Power head?

So i was looing for your guys personal opinion on which power head i should get for me new 10g build. The Jebao WP-10 wavemaker, or a MP-10 or a MP-40. Any thoughts would help

MP40 would be all WAY too much for a 10 gallon. MP10 would be your best bet. If money is an issue, go with the WP10, though, you won't get the same reliability out of them as you would an MP10.

What corals do you plan on keeping?

+1
The MP40 would take up half of your tank and spew water everywhere.
I'd go with the MP10

I bought the PP-8 for a 75 gallon and it is only on setting 3/10.

The 40 would be OVERKILL! I would recommend the 10

None of the above.. The WP series is old/junk and no way in heck would I pony up for a Vortech for a 10G tank..
Jebao PP-4 is the right choice if you want a "wavemaker" vs a "powerhead"..

In general for a 10G tank around 300GPH-500GPH should be plenty.. Typically one shoots for a total flowrate of 30 to 100 times display size and basically 60+ is for SPS tanks that want very high flow..

The models can be confusing so I think this is right:

WP-10 (1000 GPH)
WP-25 (2000 GPH)
WP-40 (3400 GPH)
WP-60 (5300 GPH)

PP-4 (1000 GPH)
PP-8 (2000 GPH)
PP-15 (3400 GPH)
PP-20 (5300 GPH)

*RW is what the same as PP, except for the magnet I think

PP are the newest however so yeah PP-4 is my recommendation.

Mcgyvr, I see what you're saying.

From my personal experience, I used to buy cheap to save costs, upgrade tanks, and spend more on cheap things, thinking I was saving money.

What I had not realized was, if I would've just spend the extra $50 on a more reliable piece of equipment, used or new, I would've been able to use that on the next tank.

I also realized if I buy slightly or totall overkill, it would allow me to save money when I do upgrade as I'd just have to buy another of what I was using. Things such as an MP10 or LED's for example can be tuned up or down for the tank needs. That's the beauty of these things!

I plan to keep lps. So pp4 it is I'm thinking. I was sitting on amazon today and I ended up impulse buying live sand "on accident" so I guess I'm setting up another tank haha

Whatever works for you..
And I fully agree..for certain things the cheapest option does NOT always make sense..
This isn't one of those times though IMO..

The cheapest MP10 is what $235.. A PP4 is $44 I can buy 5 PP4's before I have spent the same as the MP10..

I know I want the mp but money and ugh idk I'll see what happens for now I'm just going to use a powerhead from my biocube

You can get a used MP10 easily. I wouldn't buy new. You can pick them up for $180 is the cheapest I've seen in the QD series. Or if you don't mind older, I've seen the white box generation going for $90-110

I have no experience with the Jebao powerheads so I won't comment on them. Plenty have them and like them. Plenty also talk about them quitting in 3 months. It's the risk if you want to take that route.

I had a 40g breeder with 2 MP10s and then a disaster happened (long story) and the tank was sold off. I kept a few pieces of equipment and setup a 7.5g cube. The MP10 was perfect since I could dial it way back. I then moved onto a 24g JBJ Nanocube and used the MP10 still. My initial investment was well worth it for me. This was all 4-5 years ago and there were few controllable pumps on the market for small tanks

Well not really I have an AI prime and a couple random powerheads laying around i have 2 spare heaters so not really except for bills. I actually just finished putting in my live sand and water!

Tunze 6040. More costly than Jebao, but much less than MP10 at comparable flow. Very durable and can tuck behind rocks so it is not so visible. Requires very little maintenance as well.
