which powerhead is good for wavemaker?

wavemaker = hard off/on

wavemaker = hard off/on

you can't use a Vortech on a wavemaker.

Regular (unmodded) MaxiJets are the best choice for wavemakers IME/IMO.

Tip: any pump or powerhead will develop chatter noise if you run calcium/alkalinity too high.

Sorry it was late and I was very tired to go into detail. I should have said don't wast ur money on maxi mods or run regular ph on the wavemakers that turn them on and off over ons over. Most ph arnt ment for that and will just limit there lif causing you to just buy more.

Deal with the current noise for awhile and save up for a vortech, I soooo wish i hadn't wasted $$ on cheap stuff over and over then still ended up buying top quality products.

IMO/IME unmodded MaxiJets on a wavemaker can create the gyre (water movement) desired in a reef aquarium.

MaxiJets aren't "cheap stuff". These powerheads are extremely reliable and durable.

It's far better to have MJ's on a wavemaker and know what type of water motion to create than own several Vortechs and not have a clue what water motion to create.

I had a thought that undo the mod, pretty sure don't have that chatter noise, but then it's only 295 gph, that wasn't good enough for my tank(180g).

Imo

Imo

three MJ1200's on a wavemaker would be the MINIMUM you'd want in a 180.

Of course, it's best not to run the minimum and other sources of water motion (returns etc.) will impact water flow in any aquarium.

I don't think recommending vortechs is unsound advice. You can get the effect you are looking for in a wavemaker, without using the wavemaker. Largely depends on what you want to spend. Koralia EVOs are supposed to be good. I personally heard chatter when I used them on an actual wavemaker, but others report having no issues at all.

Mabie im missing something. Why would you want a wave maker on a vortech, it has it's own wave maker built in that's kind of the idea of the thing. They also wirelessly link together to work well. I have 2 mp40wes on a 125. They are great. You can creat a number of different wave motions, way more then a simple wave maker.

Before I had mj's and koralia evos on a wave make and I did not get close to the movement I get now. I had 5 pumps in there before as well now I have 2 vortechs. No comparison the vortechs are much better.

I used Seios on a Seio wave maker for a while in my old 180, and they were pretty quiet. Upgraded to Tunze eventually.

I think start/stop wavemakers are kind of pointless. I bought one and took it off my system after a week of use.

The main idea is something cheap, and efficiency. Wish I could afford 1k for the wave maker :-)

Why use a wavemaker at all? Point the powerheads at each other and it will create turbulent flow. A stop start wavemaker just lowers the overall flow in your tank.

I always thought most of the noise is due to the wavemaker itself... I've heard some reports of powerheads making noise at start up, always thought that to be related to the powerheads throttling down to 0 revolutions then starting up.

I was thinking about HK's on a red sea controller for my own build... this in the same boat?

don't we all :)

Before there were Tunze Streams and Vortechs we used MJ's on wavemakers.
It works. It's less expensive. (That's not to say it's a worse choice.) Set up a gyre water flow pattern. Grow Acropora. Sell Acro frags and purchase Tunze or Vortech if you think it's necessary.
