Which pump for my 240? Dart or the one larger?

I am setting up my 240 and was wondering which pump I should use to return water from my sump. I do not have a closed loop. I was thinking of using a couple of modded mj1200's plus the return pump as my only circulation. What do you think? The pump will be in my living room so it must be as quiet as possible.

I just turned on my new 210. I am running a Sequence Barracuda (the one larger). The hum is a little loud but not overwhelming. I am looking for a thick piece of rubber to put under it. Hopefully that will quiet it down a little.

Are you looking to use the pump strictly for pushing water up to the return or do you want to use the pump for alot of your water flow?

How much head pressure do you need?

Im using a Barracuda on my 180 with about 15 feed of head pressure.

Make sure the over flows in your tank can handle the amount water your pump can put out.. i had to throttle back my pump because it was pushing to much water. I also T'ed it off so i could put some flow through the fuge.

the dart is a huge pump for a return.. more that 3600 gph going through a sump.. thats crazy... why not move less thann 2,000 gph through your sump and hook up the dart via closed loop...?

I think the dart is a good choice. I get about 2000 gal/hr with 8 ft of head. The overflow cannot handle that much flow so I valve the pump down. With the dart pump valving down reduces the wattage along with the flow. The dart is limited to 12ft max head.

I have a sequence hammer head on my 240 for return love it , I also hav my sump and equipment in a fish room behind the tank.

Are either of you using anything else for circulation in the tank. I was going to just use the dart and a couple of modded mj1200's. I see some guys using 3 darts and a couple of Tunze streams? This seems like too much.

I use a barracuda on my 90g closed loop. The pump is still too loud after isolating all vibrations.

I am downgrading to a snapper to save my ears.

I got a dart as a return for my 240, it has pleanty of flow and is very very easy on the ears

also if you want add Eductors/penductors to the return lines and you just incresed the flow x 5 with no extra equipment, thats what I did

good luck

reeferman, how much other equip? trying to choose a sequence pump for my 225 project, will also feed a growout tank & fuge.

Man that's a whole lot of flow going through your sump...anything more than what your skimmer pump runs is a waste - imo.
If you plan on incorporating a fuge that would be another reason to use much slower flow through your sump.

I agree with Eagles - we tend to use the main return as our tool to create water flow within the tank. To do so requires a big pump. The cost is a lot of noise from the drains. All the main circ pump need do is move enough water for the skimmer to do its job.

On the good side - The Dart is wonderfully quiet for a living room (avoid Iwaki â€"œ very noisy). It will do you well if your head pressure is OK. The Dart cranks 2400gph at 6ft. Sequence will tell you that by installing a valve on the output side you can throttle back the flow. This makes the pump run cooler. Last longer, and reduces the wattage consumption. I would use a Dart and throttle it â€"œ you can tune the pump to your needs, but you can’t increase the output of a pump to small.

Decisions Decisions …. I am starting a 300 or 375 and have been contemplating the dart pump myself. I wanted to originally use the dart so I can have 2 1½ returns on each side of the tank. This tank will be an in wall room divider. I am using a 55 as a sump. Noise and power consumption are big concerns of mine. That’s why I liked the dart.

Other has mentioned on the forums the same thing about too much pump for the return. I was thinking of starting out with something smaller for the return. Just liked mentioned on this forum. Something that can feed 2 1½ on each side of my tank. Then use the dart for a closed loop, with an OM 4 on a timer to conserve power. What pump can handle a few feet of pipe. I already have a pair of maxijets too help.

So I have a couple questions?

For the 375 with a smaller pump can I use my 55 gal as the sump?

What pump can work in the sum and have enough power for 2 returns?

Then how do I hook up the calcium reactor? Does that tie of the sump pump? Should I figure this into the calculation?

What about returns? Where should they be for the open loop, and closed loop?

Do the penducters add alot of head pressure if it is on a closed loop to a dart? I know the dart isn't very pressure rated so I am wondering if you use it on a CL setup if it will indeed increase the flow by 5x or even close? How about the looks of the penductors?

I mean if a dart has minimul head on a CL setup, you would see about 3000+ flow, but if it was indeed just 4x, that would bring it to 12000 per hr, is this accurate? Anyone who has them agree?

I will be using an iwaki 55 rlt, because i have it, for the return though my sump. I will then use a dart in some kind of closed loop configuration. I do not have holes drilled for the closed loop so I have to figure something out.

I run a Barracuda on my 240 for the return. I am using it for flow and filtration. It is a little louder than I expected, but I am pleased overall with the results.

I have two 1.5" drains and two 1 inch return lines that feed a 3/4 outlet on each line. The result is good flow shooting toward each other from opposite ends. Currently eliminates the need for additional powerheads.

Haven't had any problems in 5 months so far. Corals and Fish are happy and healthy. Although, I also run a relief line from the pump back to the sump so the drains are over run.

I'm using a barracuda on my 375g tank too and it is loud. I can hear it from my bedroom in the second floor of the house. I'm thinking of switching it to dart when I have the time.
