Yeah, they aren't going in my DT. I am setting up a frag tank with leftovers from my upgrade, in which only five or so frags will be put in right off the bat.
I bought one bag of each kind of plug/tile/disc from BRS back in November. I really like the non-cermaics, but I noticed that they tend to grow algae crazy fast. I think I have super Phosphate frag racks, since that is where all of the algae grows (hence the reason I tore them out of my tank). If you have tabling acros, take a look at the magnetic frag plugs. I really like the way the corals look coming out of the glass.
Another problem I have ran into is if I buy something from someone and the coral is encrusted on a piece of rock I break it off and dip it as soon as I get it home. Bad things are less likely to be on a frag plug than a piece of rock where bad things have more places to hide. Just my advice.
I would rather buy frags on rubble rock such as that. I hate getting frag tiles or plugs. They look dumb, are hard to place, and I end up ripping the coral off of it anyhow to glue down to my rock. With rubble rock it's so much easier.
The point I was making is with rubble you can transfer bad things from one persons tank to another easier than you will with a frag plug. Not taking the chance here if I can help it. There are VERY few people that Id take a piece of rubble from. Hey if you didnt take it from me or anyone else I wouldnt blame you. If you get a piece on a frag plug break it off glue it to one of the rocks in your tank and put the frag plug in your frag tank let it grow out and sale it for you what you bought it for and you have your money back. (Saying if the frag tank was not connected to the main system)
I understand the transfer issue, but do you think a proper dip that the coral should have anyhow would not negate that? Not trying to argue it but get your thoughts.
I know where your coming from. As for me if someone has a high dollar SPS system or any other highdollar system for that matter I wouldnt take a chance of it. Break it off and glue it down on the rock from your tank. I dip everything no matter whos tank it comes from but I still wouldnt put their rock in my tank even if I dipped it. This is just me I know most people wouldnt care. I think the more cautious you are about things like this the better off youll be and more peace of mind youll have.
If price is your deciding factor go to lowes or HD & just buy a few single pieces of ceramic tile. (will prob cost less than 5.00) Bop them with a hammer & bam you have ceramic frag pieces. Your frAGS should cover them up by the point you r ready to sell them anyways.
They actually sell ceramic tile that is less than 1" square that is perfect. I've got a few in my tank from other members, plan to snag some for my frag tank soon.
I would be carefull of tile to make sure it has not anti mold coating? I know that some of the tile is used for tub floors and walls and may have some stuff you don't want.
