Which Skimmer???

I am a Newbie, ONE WEEK into cycle.

1) Is a skimmer necessary? 2) Which is the best for my unit?


My set up so far.
Aquapod24, 32W MJ1200 and Hydro Koralia 1, LS and 24lbs of LR. Removed Bio Balls and the bag of stones, however left in the filters as perscribed by my LFS. Set up 3/10/07 and cycling.

Any suggestions on anything is requested.

Welcome to the nano world, its alot of fun. The most impotant thing is to try and make the water stable. Get a Digitemp or something to monitor the temp. It should not move more then 3 degress durning the day, ideally no more then 2 degrees. You can use heaters and fans to cool as needed. After your tank has cycled its a good idea to do weekly water changes of 10% or more and ensure the new water matches the current water as close as possable as far as temp and water parameters.

I had a skimmer and took it out because it was a pain to deal with the water levels in the back chamber but I plan on giving it another shot. I would wait on the skimmer and just ensure you do your weekly water changes and change out the Carbon and rinse filters regulary.

i think the best skimmers for the nanos are the sapphire and remora.

Agree, I have a Nanocube 12DX up and running for over a year and I did not use a skimmer. Just change 15 to 25% water every week.

My LFS said the same, not needed, just change the water weekly as you also stated. I do see so many people on here putting skimmers on thier Aquapods and Nanos though.

I'd spend that money on a doser or top off instead.

I'd spend that money on a light upgrade, or maybe a tank upgrade...that is what I will be doing in few weeks.

it also depends on what sort of tank you want. I have a sea horse nano without a skimmer and I do weekly water changes. I also have a nano that I plan on being full sps - I just added a Remora skimmer in addition to the weekly water changes.

You can definitely have a nano without having a skimmer.
