I want to buy at least one SPS coral for my tank. What can I keep under 260W of PC lighting in a 55g tank.

I am looking at the Montipora Coral, Encrusting found at the liveaquaria site: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/....cfm?pCatId=472 (this is the biggest one)

Montipora Capricornis, Red/Orange- Aquacultured[b/]: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/...cfm?pCatId=1470 AWESOME looking coral!!! But can I?

Also the Psammocora superficialis found here at the Diver's Den: http://www.liveaquaria.com/diversde...=8342&siteid=20

Montipora Digitata Coral, Green - Aquacultured found here: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/...cfm?pCatId=1275

Elkhorn Montipora Coral, Green - Aquacultured: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/...cfm?pCatId=1381

Which is the better, prettiest, hardiest, coral that can survive in my current setup? Will be ordering soon a Dersa clam from liveaquaria, and would like to know if I should put anything else in the basket THANKS!!!

go with the digitata, a nice start.
Remember now that this is going to be expensive. Once you get the stonie bug, next purchase will be the light upgrade, then the Ca reactor, then . . . .

I know that some have luck with keeping monti caps under pc lighting. Thrive, probably not. But exist and grow "some".

You could go with Digi or monti cap BUT they must be really high up near the light. You should try and get T5 HO lights.

I'm currently upgrading as my acros don't like the current lighting by you should be fine w/ digis and caps.

My digis are high in the tank and colorful. The elkhorn grows reasonably fast buy my purple digi is really slow and both of my caps are colorful and fast growing.

HTH

This is true...SO true

My orange cap grew well under my 260W PC lighting. It was located about half way up in the tank.

I do believe it is growing faster under the T5 lighting, though.

Nodusa???

Nodusa???

Whatis a Monti Cap? Is it a Montipora capricornis? What is a Monti Nodusa? Could that work in my setup, and do you all have pictures of it. The one at liveaquaria is not a good pic.

This is what they look like
here;'s a digi

Here is a cap

I have a orange monti cap ( actually turning a neon pink), & a neon green encrusting montipora that are both doing awesome. Under 195watts pc lighting on a 25g.

Personally i feel like it is just as important to have light of good spectrum as well as proper intensity, like maybe use another actinic bulb where you might usually not. I'm not saying this would let you keep a more light needy coral, just that it would probably improve your chance with the corals already mentioned
just my thoughts

Funny you should say that steelreef!
I run 3X65w..1 10k, 1 actinic 03, & 1 blue actinic
gives me much better color then 10k/03 combo.

if kept about 12" fro mthe surface or less i think they would do just fine . not sure if you're using 55w pcs or 96w but under 96w i have even seen acro secale color up to a nice pastel purple. i have also personally had milleporas color up to bright purple under 96 watt pcs years ago ( although admittedly it took them several months to adjust)

side note. What you DO want to do is change the bulbs out frequently becasue they degrade very fast, which is why t5's are a better option.
