Any opinions on this white ball on the tail? I was looking at his fins and they seem OK A little splotchy but not pronounced white like the ball.

He is eating and seems healthy otherwise. I noticed it maybe 2 days ago.

Can this be cotton?

White cauliflower-like growths on the body, fins, and especially on the edges of the fins is usually Lymphocystis. It's a virus infection that generally occurs due to a compromised immune system. You see it often pooping up after copper treatment. Other common causes are stress from conflicts with other inhabitants or poor water quality.

In most cases it goes away by itself once the stressor is removed. Same if it showed up after copper treatment.

Generally, all your have to do is to make sure that the conditions in the tank are good and the fish is well fed.
