White Mushrooms

OK time to see just how rare these are.

I have a rock of 8 white mushrooms. I know what you are going to say, they are just bleached or not getting enough light, but not the case. These guys have been in the top of my tank under the MHs, the bottom in the shade, every lighting possible. They are currently set so a couple are in full light, couple and full shade and some in the middle.

They are solid white, not clear and a couple have just a few tiny red dots around the mouth. I have looked everywhere and researched as much as I can and can not find anything about white mushrooms. Has anyone heard anything I haven't??

I know you don't want to hear it, but yes, they're bleached. Sometimes bleached corals take an extremely long time, like nearly a year, to color back up, if you wanna post some pics up you'll get more specific answers as to what they are though...

Yup. Most likely bleached.

I beg to differ. They have been white in my tank for a year now. That's what I figured when I first got them because the guy that had them said they were white for him too and he thought they were just bleached.

I will get some pictures up tomorrow when the lights are on.

OK, pictures arent the best, the white doesn't photograph well, but here they are. Like I said they have been in all different spots in my tank for a year and where white before I got them. I and the few dozen reefers that have seen them swear they are not just bleached.

They look bleached to me because they have a translucent look to them. I've seen some Yumas that had a lot of white & the color was solid and not see through like your picture looks.

They also look small based on your fingers..........have they grown & reproduced?

They look pretty bleached and unhappy to me as well, but it is difficult to tell from the pics.

True white corals are extremely unusual, as it indicates a total lack of the symbiotic algae that photosynthesis for the coral. Some Non Photosynthetic species are white, but they are very difficult to care for and need massive and frequent feeding to survive.

I have encountered some stressed corals that stay bleached for years at a time.

Whenever I see that comment and "let's see how rare these are" in bleached coral threads it really worries me as to the motives for the thread in the first place, since 100% of the time it's combined with someone arguing tooth and nail that their coral is rare and not bleached.

+1, eventually those will go back to being purplish tonga mushrooms by the look of it. Those are pretty notorious for staying bleached for a really long time too...

They have grown and reproduced being completely white. They have not done so quickly but they have. Like I said they are completely white with tiny red dots around the mouth. Since they have been that color for a year or more I still don't think they are bleached.

Send me a couple and let them reproduce in my tank also and see if they're bleached... I'll pay for shipping :)

yeah send me one ill pay for shipping too.. I got some big boy halides that will make this puppy shine..haha been drinking..good luck on it..it would really cool if they were white and not bleached if that makes sense..peace

i cant tell if they are bleach or not but my friend had a rock of those mushroom and they were just white like that and he have them for like 2 years and they never change color they reproduce and the babys grow white too!! and they are ricordias he took the piece of rock with just 2 mush and they reproduce to 10 he found them in one of the shore reefs of Puerto Rico! so my friend im with u if they where bleach or not idk but they never change color!!!!!! soo good luck with them and anjoy them to the max!! :))

need better pictures really, i've had bleached mushrooms and they go translucent not white as other people mentioned this is because they don't have a calcium skeleton.
but from the pictures they look more translucent than white but the pictures aren't that good quality
