My LFS has 2 med size and asking $75 ea. plus tax. Is this a good price? My fish book calls them white spotted puffer, the LFS is calling them a "stars and stripe" puffer. Anyone have any info on this puffer? Thanks PP

Arothron meleagris or Arothron hispidus? Do a search and and let us know which species you think it is. Probably A. Hispidus, they get to be 19" - Marine Center has them at 2" listed for $39.

That is a very high price!!
My LFS sell 6 inch mappas for 99.95, and those for about 35.00
Just be warned that is one of the meanest puffers there is!!!

Yep, it is a stars and stripe also, but the price they are asking is very expensive. I can easily get a 5 incher for 28 bucks at mine.

they say its a stars and stripes ( arothron hispidus) puffer. I dont want something thats going to get really big. I have a 75g. I really like the dogface (thats what I just lost). Any more info? Any good places to get one at? Thanks pp

PP, have you seen the black and white morphs of the dogfaced puffers? One of our LFS has gotten several in recently, they are sweet looking - very tempting. They run $75-$100 around here for a 6-8" (both stores that carry them regularly around here are a bit pricey). I think the dogface is a better fit for your 75 just because the stars and stripes gets so big so fast, he could outgrow the 75 in a year to 18 months. You could also do a golden, a panda, a guinea fowl, a porky, a spiny box (not as hardy as porkys), or even a Toby. I have a Canthigaster Epilamprus and they are great fish. What he lacks in size he makes up for in personality and they can be kept with a variety of fish and coral. He leaves pretty much everything alone except I believe he killed a good sized arrow crab a while back. I found the crab one morning with his belly ripped open. He could have died and the puffer then started eating him or the puffer might have decided he wanted to taste him? Anyways, let us know what you end up with.

Thanks laura for the info. I will keep ya posted. Sounds like I got some deciding to do:D I will leave the stars/strpes alone. They are nice looking but not for me and my tank. Thanks all...PP

Depending on your budget, as they are more expensive, but the golden dogface puffers are beautiful, however, I rarely see them for less than $200.00.
