white stuff on encrusting monti

orthokardia

New member
i think i got my first bad critters in the tank, but not sure. the only recent addingtion in the last 3 months was a few crabs and shrimp friday.

i have 2 pink encrusting monties in two different parts of the tank. about a week ago (before friday) the one on the rith looked like it had some white slimey spots. i thought nothing of it as i have heard the stuff can happen dosing vodka.

last night i noticed the same stuff on the other about 3' away. it was not affecting any other corals even the monti caps a few inches away. oh crap i says. up close it looks like a white cobweb with white dots (eggs??) in it. i tried to blow it off last night and it was back this am worse than ever.

the piece that has had it for a week hase some minor bleaching and tissue recession on one end. i removed both piece and dipped then this morning

i posted this in the club forum, but without pics (still looking for my camera) no one had any suggestions

help please,
-bart

While it could well be montipora eating nudibranchs, I've seen damage/problems like that caused by other things.

First off, I see you have a 300g mixed reef - depending on how it's stocked, you could be having some chemical warfare going on. I've seen new Monti's to a tank react like that if you aren't running sufficient carbon.

Also, what's your alkalinity? Any alk swings lately?

Any LPS nearby? I'd hate to have you thinking you had nudis when it was just a Torch coral stinging your Monti. :)

I am pretty sure it is a critter. It does not look like the pics of MENs. Here is a better pic.

its a stress response, and usually will subside and go away
