Who are our newbie?

Also, as you plan to transition to reef, plan for the following.

Start with generic salt for your fowlr (no need for fancy ionic elements in water). Transition to "better" salt. I use aquavitro salinity. Others use neomarine. They are "reef-quality" salt.

Plan to get a good skimmer if you don't already have one by then for your fowlr.

To start, use whatever lighting on your fowlr and start with easy corals so you don't have to get energy-efficient semi-broad spectrum T5HO fluorescents, or heat generating very wide/broad-spectrum metal halides, or narrow spectrum(spikey) LED lights.

Get a good reef test kit for nitrates, calcium, and alkalinity. And maybe phosphates.

Plan to get controller for your tank. This lets you program lights and measure your pH easily.

Welcome guys, feel free to ask if you have any questions. Also welcome to the Dark Side. (saltwater reefkeeping) ;)

Older thread but thought it was a god one to introduce myself in.. I'm not a newbie to reefing yet not an expert by anyone's standards;-) .. Current tank is going on 13 years old and an upgrade in process.. I was just stopping by wine country to see what it's all about after starting an inquiry of reef clubs in the SF bay area section of Rc and getting some insightful info and opinions.. I'm pretty far south of most of you but not too far :-)..

Just scanning through your local forums seems like it's just so much more active than the SF one in some ways and got me thinking of making the trek to a meeting or two.. Hope you guys don't mind a southerner stopping by a future meeting..

I've met with zeroinreverse once to get a GBTA and recently he bought a fixture off of me. He responded to my thread with some helpful info and insight on local clubs.. So I hope to meet up with some of you guys and participate in your events and contribute what I can coral wise and more than likely become a member;-) ..

I have a busy schedule but always make time for my tank and need that next step to be connected to people with the same hobby and passion so I will lurk on your local forums and hopefully make it up to meet you guys when my schedule allows if that's ok..

Great thread's and support you guys got Goin on. I used to do a lot of work in marin and farther north and it's really not that far from me.. Plus I do have a fast car and usually abuse speed limits lol..

(edit) that was my 1400th post! ( mostly supposed to be working ) almost all from a smartphone so most are misspelled and a continuous run on sentence lol..

Let me be the first one to welcome you to WCR. Make the trip up and attend our meetings. Our next one is Sunday June 23.

Come check out Grant's tank. That's what first got me into the WCR group.

Hey D, Welcome to the gang. We have people come from all over the place so you're not alone. The next meeting is on the 23rd at my place in Petaluma. Hope you can make it. Grant

BTW congrats on the 1400 post count. :)

Bunch of nice people here and that's why I check on WCR each day. Yeah..... i know its an excuse that I cannot make it to the meeting and meet all of you because I'm "all the way" in San Ramon. Well, let me put it this way. I would had joined you guys if not that I have two little kids who are taking most of my time already. Yes, Ron just had a new addition and he is still so active and can go because he has a GREAT wife. :)

Like Ron said, there're not many reefers in the East Bay. And I really need to "feed" my 90g with some of your nice collections. Maybe one of those days I will plan a trip to north and visit all of your beautiful tanks.
