I have always used tap + Prime on high-tech planted my f/w tanks with NO issues.
I used tap to top off my BC-29 once when I was out of RO/DI water. I didn't see any ill effects, but didn't want to keep it up. This was before I had my own system and kept water in jugs from the LFS, now I just keep a garbage can full of s/w and jugs of RO/DI.
It would put more value to this thread if the people saying they use hard water and high pH from the tap for who knows how many years actually added some pics of their system. Sure it might be keeping something alive, but is it thriving and pretty to look at? IMO RO water is one of the lowest expenses we have in the hobby, especially if you get smart with recycling your waste water.

My 240 softy tank.
Pardon the frag racks, when I took the picture I was moving some zoanthids out of the zoanthid tank for trading.
Everything that is in this tank has been in it for 4 years and originally came from a 180 that was setup for 8+ years.
+1. It all depends on whats in the tap water. The bad thing is you have no idea what is coming down the pipe. I live in a tourist town and during big events the city will use extra clorine to to process the tap water faster. Sometimes it will burn your eyes in the shower. Like to see someone dump that in a reef tank.
