Who has been buying Acropora abrotanoides

Well now you have seen one. :) Purple with Blue polyp Abrotanoides. Had this for quite a while. It likes PAR above 500 and strong indirect flow. It has finally decided to "pop" and start growing quickly.

I just took a couple more pics and am tring to upload to photobucket now. For some reason, I keep getting an error.

I don't see an abro in those corals.

Ya know, you may actually be right. I'm looking at the coralite structure from some pics I've found on line, and they do look different. The one that was sold to me as (and I originally thought it was) an abrotanoides was the one in the very center that looks purple.

I'll provide some updated pics as it grows more. At this point, the coralites look different from an Abro. Bummer.

Yeah, Tony B is one who always kept that abro. I have been admiring that abro for a long time. I remember seeing it as a smaller colony.

So are these A. abrotanoides?

I got them because I liked the growth structure, never bothered to ID them though...Had the green/pink for 4 months (its encrusted now, old pic) and the red for 5 months.

It is close to microphthama.

Those sure are....I had the green one for a year it was even looking good at one point growing and coloring and than went down hill to nothing for no apparent reason. It was never a fast grower though.

Good luck with those.....they are very nice, you almost can't help but try. Its so tempting because they ship very nice and look good on arrival. I even see the green with pink tips look supper hot when it is slightly bleached from shipping. People are drawn to it.

I am attempting my second after I lost my first in the move... Had mine for 2 years... Browned out for about 6 months and then started looking great! Did not like the move nor the 90-100 degree shipping box it was in... Boo... :thumbdown

Nothing to do with difficultly level or living/dieing IMO, simply put they just don't look that great in an aquarium long term. And when I say long term I mean more than a year...

They are difficult, but possible. I don't consider it a newbie Acro. Have you seen new reefers buy them and kill them often?

Think I tried one of the green with pink tip also with similar results...just a species I will never buy a colony of again.........show me a captive gown frag from an "established" colony that looks good, then I might give it a go.

upon closer inspection, you guys might be right .... the first pic could be some other species ...

the one with red tips is what has came back after I got rid of AEFW Issues ...

I got one from DD a few months back. it is doing great under powerful LEDs and strong flow. i has huge PE, but it has completely "browned out". it still is a great looking coral. I did notice that NO3 over 2 causes less PE.

I used to feel the same way until I saw rigleautomotive's A. Abro. I'll ask him to post some pics of his in this thread. It was his pics that made me want to give this gorgeous coral a second shot.

Is this one? I've had it for 2 months now and it has darkened slightly and PE is much better. It has encrusted about 1/2" more around the base since this picture

Found a newer picture complete with cyano!!

Ive always admired Dan's and Tony's abro's...beautiful. It gives me hope one day maybe. I do have a frag going right now..its a left over from an old piece. It has encrusted well...its green and has a faint pink tip but not very vibrant....its about to get crowded out from the faster growing acros around it now too. I could moving it but im not sure i have the patients.

Copps also has one in his tank.

And Coral Morphologic (Aquascapers) has it listed as a coral they sell. I've been tempted to try theirs out since it should be captive grown frag.

I bought one off of Dan and it's pulling back around. From the huge swings I've had in my tank in the past year it has survived when many SPS have perished. Now that my tank has stabilized again its starting to look better.

I've had the green w pink tips for over a year and it's growing and looking good. Just got the red one too and will see how it does but it looks good so far...
