We still don't know, although some speculate that they feed off of bacterial colonys within the liverock.... other speculate sponge colonys.. others just detritus, but I disagree about the detritus and algae, if they fed off that we could ALL KEEP THEM ALIVE! haha
I think they feed of bacterial and protozoan colonys in the rockwork... and possibly sponges...
I know my orange linckia eats tunicates...
I bought a daisy polyp rock from my work that we just got in, straight from the supplier, it had about 4 or 5 colonys of tunicates on it as well as the daisy polyps... IMMEDIATELY somehow the Linckia awoke in daylight and made its way STRAIGHT to the rock and ate up those colonys within a few days... the star got RIGHT ON TOP of them and pressed down it looked like.. then they were gone...
I suppose I need to be buying tunicates for it to eat!!!
