who is culturing live foods, esp copepods and phyto?

well i thought the mail girl had left the box out in the rain it was falling apart but one of the bags had leaked out the knots and was completely dry but the frag was fine and most of the time i ship them 'dry' like that only wrapped in wet paper towels. the other was still in water and it's fine as well.
 
I am glad that they were okay. Sorry about the leak. I was trying to tie the knots as well as possible, but my grip may not have been very good with wet hands. I could have shipped dry, but I was not sure if you were okay with the type of shipping method. When I received dry shipped SPS's the first time, I knew they were okay that way, but I still freaked out a bit. The SPS's have done very well in my tank, though.

I don't think the GAC/Phosar mixture I mentioned to Kwajrocks is out yet.

I quit mixing the two because it's really not easy to figure out proper replacement timing. It's a lot easier to run them separately.

ok. i cant get identical answers from both of you and not take that advice :)

we are finishing the stand for the 75 tomorrow...anything i should know but dont before i finish?
 
carbon once in a blue moon is OK, but it's not necessary in most cases. if you're keeping large leathers with SPS or you're fragging leathers then sure run it as needed but otherwise it's not much benefit to the system IMO.
 
i don't recall just exactly which thread it was where i posted my 10g brine shrimp cultures at but this is a good enough place to post some updates...........

the 10g setups just weren't producing enough to keep me from having to hatch regularly enough so about 2 weeks back i drained my 100g in my garage that was a LR holding tank (bleached 400 lbs of rock to clean that baby out :) ), added 50ish gallon of stock water and everything i could get out of the hatching container of 4 large scoops of cysts, I'd say 1/4 million BBS easy..........

two weeks and about 10 gallon of Nanno later and this is what i got:

Wow, that's impressive!! Eggs to adult in about 2 weeks in such a huge mass.

As for GAC, I agree with you. I use GAC in my 120 for the very reason you cited. On the other hand, my 15 runs without GAC, GFO or skimmer and it's been a very good set up for softies.

So you see, Tim, you do get identical answers. Just not at the same time.

and keep in mind there isn't any one way to do anything. i kept very successful reefs for 10+ yrs with UGF and thick layers of CC on top of them, you'll find people these days who'll swear it can't be done. i don't use them anymore because there are better ways that are allot less work, but they can be done none the less :)
 
I remember some people still using UGF and CC when I started reefing. My experience with a UGF in planted tank taught me that it can turn into a lot of work eventually. I don't have an UGF any more, but it was a big decision for me to switch to a substrate system without an UGF in my planted tank. That was many years ago now.....

When someone swears up and down that a certain thing cannot be done, another person always come up with a proof that it can be done. It may be a rather unconventional method, but it works for the person very well. We have more than one of those people here.... Beaslbob is the first person that comes to my mind. He is quite unique :)

yeah i made the mistake of commenting on a question asked several weeks back, the question was: How Do Carpets Reproduce In Aquariums. to which i boldly replied 'They Don't In Captivity' only to have my carpet clone the next few weeks :( and speaking of which, Tim they are both doing fine :)

I thought about getting a mini carpet anemone (Stichodactyla tapetum) in the past. Some of them look like yours although the mini's never get that large. It's quite tempting, but I am going to stay away from anemone.

Everyone.......a lesson learned today :) with the demand for phyto that the brine shrimp put on me over the past few weeks i stepped my cultures up from 2L to gallons and a few of them had problems. i was getting this nasty sludge build up around the top of the bottle like you get if you use to fine an air bubble and it was collecting in the bottom in large clumps. I've never had a single crash of any culture so i figured 'Oh well it's just my time'

i strained the problem phyto through a 10 micron filter and removed most of the 'sludge' and re-sterilized the containers and set them back up. i also split one of them into another container and re-bloomed. the two problem containers did the same thing over the next day or two but not the one that was split from one of them which was strange. long story short it turned out the two containers had to tight a seal (trying to keep contaminants out) and they were pressurizing, enlarged the vent hole and problem solved :) so Tim, make sure you got enough venting on your culture containers :D
 
Interesting. My "sludge" happens on top of the cap around the air hole if the hole is too tight or if I fill the bottle too close to the top. Must be the water level difference.
