Who is holding out for LED lights??

I know that I am, like many people, wanting to make the best investment when it comes to lighting my fishtank. So my question is, who is going to wait to but new lights until the LED systems are established on the market?

Here is a link to the PFO website who is selling them

<a href="http://www.solarisled.com/">LED lights </a>

There are so many choices now!

Those look pretty sweet. Once the prices come down a bit, I'd definately consider those over MH.

Looks like they may since other companies are coming out them some here soon too. Some pictures coming from MACNA show LEDs with PC mixed, not sure why you would need the PCs

I think their using the PCs to do the grunt work.

they could use entirely LEDs but why, PCs are almost surely cheaper per par; there are enough LEDs to market it as such and get the nifty varying temp output to be visible.

plus they work in planned absolescence; as well as a consumed part to an otherwise long life product. can only kill a sheep once, but you can sheer it over and over.

I really like the fact that the unit has its own center mount with the LEDs spread for either side of the tank....This will work well with tanks like mine that have a center brace (no shadow casting) ...I also think the built in LCD timer screen is gonna work out really well, reading the review the possibilities of a typical day on the reef can be simulated almost perfectly...(cloud cover, dusk, dawn, midday sun etc...) and the fact that you can adjust the lightning from 0-100% anywhere in the range of 6.5k -22k ...wow ...but $1900 for a 36" unit ....:eek2:

Yes but think of how much money you spend yearly on bulbs. I was doing the math and it would actually be cheaper for me to go with a 48" unit for my system than buy bulbs for the next 10 years plus it states it is cheaper to run (Lower electricity bill) and the bulbs are suposed to last 14years. The only draw back is who is to say I will still have the same size tank from here to 10-14 years.

Competition will help with pricing. Current-USA fixture above.

I'm pretty sure you will have your tank for the next 300 years unless you get rid of that ugly, fake plant taking up space on the left .

FYI; the brightest LED sold to the public puts out around 120lumens. 120lumens is equal to about 1.5w of mh.

so those 36 leds they have there is equivalent to 75w of halides, theorecticly speaking.

the rest of the way to 250w that they compare it to must be from the PCs. makes more sense why the PCs are there.

more than cost needs to change for me to sign up. if they want to claim bulb life, shouldnt they atleast account for the 4 PC bulbs that will need to be changed instead?

looks like a PC fixture with LED supplements more than LED with PC supplement.

but hey, light years ahead of what they offered even a year ago. so it will come.

I still like halides shimmer :).

The video posted of LED shimmered about as much as T5 (ie not much)

Also the LED's might last for years and years, but I doubt the electronics and everything running them will...:|
