im trying to fing out how many gph that an opening of 15sq" will flow.or should i say how many gph will the openings allow to flow?

for 2500gph it says 2.06 "diameter pipe,15sq"of openings is more suface area than a 2" pipe so i assume this would be enough overflow area to cover a dart as a return pump?

Chris,

My overflow is 12" X 6" or 18 liner X 1" + tall (18sq"+a little) with most of the teeth cut out, it is plenty for the dart at a 5' head, with 3/8" to spare from the top of the teeth or 1/2" from the euro-brace.

15 sq" might be pushing it.

I can tell you when I get home. I have a book on fluid dynamics.
It has the principles for water flow per psi per area.

mike that would be great.im trying to figure out what size overflow cuts i will need to run a dart as a return pump for the 180.i have drawn them at 1"x5" with three slots so that gives me appox 15sq" of open surface.

here are some pics of a sample joint i did tonight out of 1" thick acrylic :)

there are a few air bubbles but i found out i can get weld-on #42.it is a 2 part that is in one tube with a special mixing tip so no air.

i already priced out the sheet.i can make the tank for about the same price as the glasscages tank.plus i can do external everything plus easy drilling :)

Well checkinhawk - I can tell you that in the 26 years I've had glass aquariums - never a scratch. You CAN buff out scratches in glass- I'm a glass artist and do this all the time. You just have to have the proper tools and know how to do it :). Is it easy - no and not very many people scratch glass so the need isn't there to make the product for aquariums. Just like acrylic it also depends on the depth of the scratch - how easy/hard it is to get out.

Chris, I can't find anything in the fluid dynamics to help your overflow situation.
Have you considered a coast to coast external overflow?

mike that is basicly what i want to do for the overflow, but i dont want to cut them too big and have a low water level in the tank.
