Let's not get into a debate if its serves a purpose beyond being a water clarifier.

On my next big system, I will run one.. either a 57w or 80w Aqua UV. I might just do a 57w when I have all my fish settled in my 180g.

So if you are currently running a UV, please provide some details..

brand, watts, water volume, flow rate, etc...

thanks.

No UV on my system but if a did it would be 50 watts per hundred gallons and run on a closed loop with 3 intakes and one return. Cant just run off your main pump and split between all your feeds.

What to you want/expect the UV to do? It cannot eliminate or prevent parasites; although it may help a little. IMO, UV seems to have gone the way of the dial telephone.

Pretty much....I own a 40 watt for my 240, but haven't used it in about 3 years. I dumped it when I switched to an RODI for my water, it was just an extra pump taking up space in my too small sump.

I am running a Aqua U/V 57 watt unit on my 180 FOWLR tank. I am running it with a Danner 3 pump and a ball valve so the flow is 175 GPH. I clean my bulb sleeve monthly and make sure it is on 24/7.

I spent weeks reading about how "worthless" UV is on RC, but I chose to run one. I lost a lot of fish to ICH in February 2012 and had to run fallow for 8 weeks. I treated the survivors with Cupramine and ran the U/V in the display. Knock on wood but I have no Ich after reintroducing all the fish back. Was it the U/V?...likely not....I am sure it was my fallow period and three weeks of copper at .50PPM in QT, but the U/V helps me sleep better.

Just for kicks if your bored you can see our sump and set up at our website:

The second video down is of our FOWLR....

I ran an Aqua 57 watt UV for 3 years. They work well for water clarity. However do not buy into this as a cure for ick. I have had my fair share of ick visits! I recently switched to ozone. This does not cure ick either but my overall water quality is much better with ozone. If I had to do it all over again I would invest in ozone. It's far more bang for the buck.
